Welcome

Our aim is to help children make the most of their abilities in a stimulating, supportive and enjoyable environment where academic, social,  moral, cultural and spiritual education are inextricably linked and valued.

Our school is a community of people working to help children become equipped to deal successfully with themselves, their surroundings and society. At Sandham we have come to share a set of fundamental beliefs which guide our daily activities. These have evolved over the years and reflect the influence of children, staff, parents and governors.

At Sandham we strive to:

Provide opportunities for all pupils to develop their learning to closely match their personal educational potential.

Work with families to create a unity of purpose about the value of education and school.

Sustain a school ethos, which promotes values that help individuals sustain positive attitudes towards themselves and others.

Help children aim for quality in their schoolwork.

Work together within the framework of educational law and limited financial resources to give our best for the benefit of both individuals and society.

CURRICULUM

Sandham can offer a unique, well organized special education needs team to support pupils. Miss Williams (Learning Educational Needs Coordinator) and Mr Weir (Behavioural and Emotional Needs Coordinator) - have the joint responsibility for co-ordinating provision.

Within each year group there is a designated member of staff who plays a `Key Role` in ensuring pupils needs are recognised and met. The school has a number of trained support staff who work with pupils in the classroom to enable them to fulfil their potential. Additional to this there are speicalized small group work sessions that can offer intensive programmes of work for those pupils who require indepth support. There are a number of outside agencies who visit the school regularly to provide assessments, advice and programmed activites.

The school has excellant transfer systems in place to ensure there are good links between feeder schools. Parents are seen as partners in the educational process with unique knowledge and information to impart.

Every effort is made to ensure SEN pupils themselves are involved in decisions about their learning. The Special Needs Team promotes Special Needs as an integral part of the entire curriculum.

We aim to:-

  • Provide effective assessment of pupils potential and performance

  • Awareness amongst all staff of pupils specialized needs

  • Provide support for pupils to access the curriculum to thier full potential

  • Provide a caring and understanding approach so all pupils feel valued

CLUBS

Throughout the year we run activities that are often an extension of the curriculum or offer the chance to develop another interest. Clubs take place between 3.00 and 4.00 p.m. on most school days.  Days and times vary according to the activity and we require parental consent before a child attends a club.  We expect children to retain their commitment to a club for at least half a term. If clubs are cancelled unavoidably then children are informed and given the option of telephoning home or remaining in school until the normal club finishing time.

The clubs on offer during the year include:

Athletics, Art, Baketball, Chess, Choir, Computers, Cricket, Cross Country, Drama, Environment, French, Gardening, Hockey, Homework, Indoor Athletics, Lacrosse, Netball, Orchestra, Rounders, Rugby, Soccer, Tennis, Technology, Textiles and Vollyball
