Our School Vision:

Our school is a partnership of pupils, parents, community and school staff working together as a team. We aim to create an enjoyable and stimulating learning environment which promotes high expectations, respect, responsibility and tolerance; thereby creating opportunities for lifelong success.

West Wight Middle caters for children in the upper junior and lower secondary age ranges. This means that we are able to offer secondary school facilities and specialist teachers, whilst providing the security and friendly atmosphere of a junior school.

The single-storey buildings house many large rooms and specialist teaching areas. The school grounds include pitches, athletics facilities, courts and play areas. Select the links at the left of this page to see more.

We have one large computer room with sufficient PCs for a full class. Another room is planned. Other individual networked PCs are placed in classrooms and in the library. Most computers have access to Internet.

The school has two large areas of grass with football, hockey, rounders, cricket and athletics. A full running track is marked out for the summer season. A large assembly hall doubles as a gym with basketball, badminton and climbing apparatus. We have direct entry to the adjacent SPORTS CENTRE which offers a sports hall and 25m pool. Tennis, basketball and netball courts are marked on surrounding play areas.

All pupils have access to our large and well resourced science laboratory which is fully equipped with equipmet to teach both primary and secondary science. A large Design & Technology room doubles as a second lab. Both have gas supplies for Bunsen burners.

The school has a range of good facilities that enable D&T to be well developed through Key Stage 3. Pupils are able to access power tools, electronics, circuit board etching, moulding, computer controlled cutting, sewing machines, digital camera, computers and hand tools.

Our computer network is continually upgraded and has a good range of software enabling pupils to access the full KS2 & KS3 curriculum. A main teaching area has sufficient computers for a class of pupils to work individually and further outposts are positioned around the school in classrooms and specialist areas. All pupils have dedicated ICT lessons in the main computer room. A second computer room is planned.

The music room is large and recently refurbished. A good range of musical instruments are available and all pupils are taught by a specialist music teacher. Adjacent rooms are used for visiting instrument teachers who provide lessons for pupils who have opted to learn a specific instrument. A new music computer facility has recently been added.

Our library is large, vibrant and well-stocked. The library is used for borrowing books, research and to support pupils' English lessons.

The main art room is large, well equipped and stimulating. Pupils have access to a wide range of facilities and specialist teachers.

Children normally transfer to West Wight Middle School in the September following their ninth birthday, when they join Year Five at Middle School.

We usually receive children from five local Primary Schools:-

All Saints' Church of England, Freshwater.
Shalfleet Church of England.
St. Saviour's Roman Catholic, Totland.
Weston Community Primary.
Yarmouth Church of England.

Prior to transfer, members of our own staff visit the children in their own schools and each Primary School brings their year 4 children to visit us for an induction day. Other curricular activities are also planned for children to experience life in the Middle School.

Pupils are with us for four years,

Year Five: nine to ten year olds
Year Six: ten to eleven year olds
Year Seven: eleven to twelve year olds
Year Eight: twelve to thirteen year olds
