Canterbury Steiner School achieves good academic results. We aim to ensure that our pupils leave the school well-qualified for the next stage of their lives. But real education should strive for more than just good intellectual skills. It is equally important, we believe, to help young people develop an active and lively imagination. Our pupils engage in an unusually wide variety of artistic and practical activities to help them explore their creative potential. The aim is not a career in the arts—though some make that choice—but to acquire the creative attitude which enables a productive approach in any walk of life A full and satisfying adult life also depends on emotional maturity and good social skills. We work to help pupils develop the emotional security, enthusiasm and social awareness essential for teamwork and real self-confidence. And with teenagers we seek to foster the self-discipline necessary for adult independence.

TOUR
Virtual Tour: Kindergarten (3-6 years)
Rudolf Steiner called the first years of a child's life the ‘years of imitation’. At this stage, everything children experience affects them deeply. The rhythm of the day, the behaviour of adults and their environment all have important influences on their life. It is therefore essential that the children's surroundings are beautiful and natural.
Their day in the Kindergarten has a strong rhythmical pattern, and includes many artistic activities: painting, modelling, drawing, singing, eurthmy, songs and games, handwork and baking.
Inside and outside, the Kindergarten is designed so as to encourage and enrich children's imaginative play. The time spent there in the Kindergarten provides the firm and healthy basis for all subsequent learning throughout the school
Virtual Tour: Lower School (ages 7-14)
When children begin this stage of their education, they enter into a unique relationship with their class teacher. Together they will progress through the school for the next eight years, the teacher guiding them for two hours every day in the 'Main Lesson', and often in other subjects too.
This continuous relationship between the teacher and child creates a strong sense of security, and minimises the usual yearly readjustment children have to make as they go from class to class. While the child develops trust and confidence in the teacher, the teacher can build an informed and sensitive understanding of each child.
The basic skills of writing, reading and numeracy are fostered within the imaginative context of the Steiner curriculum, and through methods unique to Steiner schools. The whole child, not just the intellect, is involved in learning, as a result of the teacher adopting a pictorial and artistic approach to all subjects, including science and mathematics.
Virtual Tour: Upper School (age 14 -17)
At the age of fourteen the pupils leave the care of their Class Teacher and from then onwards a Class Guardian takes responsibility for the Class, and is in regular contact with parents. Pastoral care and guidance is now shared by upper school teachers who are responsible for the specialist teaching required by the young adults as they enter the Upper School.
The imaginative and artistic approach characteristic of all Lower School teaching now turns towards developing the critical thinking, objectivity and careful consideration essential in all subjects at this level. The full Steiner curriculum continues to be taught throughout the four years of the Upper School. Alongside it, pupils may also study for GCSE examinations(up to a maximum usually of eight), sat in Class XI.
Standards of excellence are attained through awakening a strong sense of beauty, an appreciation of each individual's best work, and a recognition of what each child can contribute to the class and to the school community.
After Class XI pupils typically go on to local sixth forms, Art or Technical Colleges, to pursue their education, with very successful results. Canterbury Steiner School has established positive links with local schools, and our pupils are valued for their high levels of maturity and motivation.
