Welcome to our school

Our School

We  provide a well disciplined and structured learning environment in which everyone is encouraged to learn and to develop to their full potential within a caring, cohesive community to enable them to take their full place in society.

School Motto:  At Chilham St Mary's CEP School ‘we learn to love and we love to learn’

  • We aim to foster and develop a love of learning and a desire to acquire skills and knowledge
  • We set high expectations and give every learner confidence they can succeed
  • We have a commitment to every learner’s success, making them feel included, valued and secure
  • We aim to raise learner’s aspirations and the effort they put into learning, engaging, where appropriate, the active support of parents or carers.
  • We set clear and appropriate learning goals, explaining them, and making every learning experience count
  • We create secure foundations for subsequent learning
  • We use teaching methods that reflect the material to be learned, matching the maturity of the learners and their learning preferences
  • We make a creative use of the range of learning opportunities available, within and beyond the classroom, including ICT
  • We aim to inspire learning through passion for the subject and bring the subject alive.
  • We aim to make it relevant to learner’s wider goals and concerns
  • We aim to make individuals active partners in their learning.
  • We build respectful teacher-learner relationships that take learners’ views and experience fully into account
  • We use assessment for learning to help learners assess their work, reflect on how they learn, and inform subsequent planning and practice.
  • We develop learning skills and personal qualities, encouraging self-control , self-respect, emotional growth and spiritual growth
  • We develop the ability to think systematically, manage information, learn from others and help others learn
  • We develop confidence, self-discipline and an understanding of the learning process.
We aim to foster and maintain a sense of community both within the school and in a wider context by encouraging the formation and continuance of relationships

ADMISSIONS

INFANT ADMISSIONS

We would appreciate parents placing theirchild's name on theschool's register of future entrants during the year before their child is eligible to attend school. The month of March, preceding entry in September is usually the closing date for applications. Parentswill be informed of the outcome of their application to have their child educated at this school soon after the closing date. If the number of applicants exceeds the standard number of places available, applications will be assessed according to the Local Education Authority's Admission Policy for a Controlled Primary School.

We feel it is extremely important that parents choose the type of school that they feel suits theirchild. To that end, we would hope thatall prospective parents are able tovisit the school during a normal school day to view the school in operation.

Prior to children beginning their school career with us, parents will receive a school entry pack which provides further information to ensure that the transfer into school is as smooth as possible. Parents are also invited to bring their child/ren to two taster sessions so that their child/renwill be as familiar
as possible with the school before their starting date.

CASUAL ADMISSIONS

If we have space within a year group then we will except admissions throughout the year. These admissions are subject to the same criteria if we reach our maximum number. We fully recommend that you visit the school before you make a decision.

CURRICULUM

The National Curriculum is a nationally devised and organised progression of

concepts, skills and knowledge. The NC provides the standard educational

entitlement for all children and is divided into core and foundation subjects.

We  are  happy  to provide  more  detailed  information  on  the National

Curriculum.

The National Curriculum core subjects are:

• English, Mathematics, Science, Information Technology and R.E.

The NC foundation subjects are:

• Design Technology, History, Geography, Music, Art, and P.E.

Additionally, at  Chilham St Mary's we teach:

• PSHE and Citizenship and French.

During the school year, each class's work is planned around a series of units of work each lasting a term. The units encompass all the foundation subjects including P.E. and link with the core subjects where appropriate.

The school follows the National Literacy Strategy and the National Numeracy Strategy and teaches these core subjects in the morning. Each class is taught Numeracy and Literacy daily and work is then set according to the ability and aptitude of the pupils. In this way, all the pupils are encouraged to reach their potential.  Individual/group  targets for each child for Literacy and Numeracy.  We are now following the Revised frameworks and working from layered curriculum targets.

Foundation Stage Curriculum

The curriculum for the Foundation Stage underpins all future learning by supporting, fostering, promoting and developing children’s:  personal, social and emotional well-being positive attitudes and dispositions towards their learning;  social skills;  attention skills and persistence;  language and communication;  reading and writing;  mathematics,  knowledge and understanding of the world;  physical development and creative development.  We have a purpose built classroom and an outside play area.

Equal Opportunities

All staff and governors at Chilham St. Mary's work to provide a full range of opportunities for all the pupils regardless of gender, race, disability, social, cultural or religious background. All pupils are given equal access to the curriculum and have a right to the same learning environment.

Sex Education

As part of our whole school Health Education Policy pupils in Year 6 are given sex education. This is provided by the School Nurse who discusses issues with our boys and girls separately. Parents have the right to withdraw their child from all or part of sex education, excepting those elements taught as part of the National Curriculum.

Every Child Matters

We are working within this framework, with other agencies, towards joining up all the services that work with children and young people.  The five themes of Every Child Matters (ECM) are:

  • Be healthy
  • Stay safe
  • Enjoy and achieve
  • Make a positive contribution
  • Achieve economic well-being

Working together enables all agencies to communicate with each other and this supports the children and their families.   Please ask at the office if you would like to see our Action Plan on ECM.

Detailed schemes of work are available to parents on request. Or these can be found on the DFES 'Standards Site'.

Children also study conversational French and can take part in a variety of extra-curricular opportunities. Our teaching methods support a wide variety of learning styles and we encourage our children to become independent, confident and reflective learners.
