The National Curriculum is a nationally devised and organised progression of
concepts, skills and knowledge. The NC provides the standard educational
entitlement for all children and is divided into core and foundation subjects.
We are happy to provide more detailed information on the National
Curriculum.
The National Curriculum core subjects are:
• English, Mathematics, Science, Information Technology and R.E.
The NC foundation subjects are:
• Design Technology, History, Geography, Music, Art, and P.E.
Additionally, at Chilham St Mary's we teach:
• PSHE and Citizenship and French.
During the school year, each class's work is planned around a series of units of work each lasting a term. The units encompass all the foundation subjects including P.E. and link with the core subjects where appropriate.
The school follows the National Literacy Strategy and the National Numeracy Strategy and teaches these core subjects in the morning. Each class is taught Numeracy and Literacy daily and work is then set according to the ability and aptitude of the pupils. In this way, all the pupils are encouraged to reach their potential. Individual/group targets for each child for Literacy and Numeracy. We are now following the Revised frameworks and working from layered curriculum targets.
Foundation Stage Curriculum
The curriculum for the Foundation Stage underpins all future learning by supporting, fostering, promoting and developing children’s: personal, social and emotional well-being positive attitudes and dispositions towards their learning; social skills; attention skills and persistence; language and communication; reading and writing; mathematics, knowledge and understanding of the world; physical development and creative development. We have a purpose built classroom and an outside play area.
