Halling County Primary School is situated in the village of Halling (population approx. 2,500) which lies at the side of the River Medway, between the villages of Snodland and Cuxton. The village has always been influenced by the cement industry. One cement factory has just closed at the edge of the village and plans are underway to construct the most modern plant in Britain at the other end of the village.

The village has taken on a more residential status over the last few years with many new properties being built. The waterfront development has had a significant effect on the school roll.

I have been headteacher of the school since 1986 when it had eighty four children and three classes and was housed in Victorian accommodation. We are now a ten class school in super modern purpose built premises. In Easter 1996 we transferred to new premises at the edge of the village by the new Dean Park estate. The school has excellent facilities with ten classrooms, fully equipped hall / gymnasium, computer room plus a totally enclosed outside environment which includes a swimming pool, changing rooms and a recently built adventure area. The school has been designed to allow a second phase development of four additional classes plus another hall to take place when needed.

Pupils take national tests at the end of each Key Stage. At the end of KS2 pupils are tested in English , Mathematics and Science. These tests give an independent measure of how pupils and schools are doing compared with national standards in these subjects. We are pleased that the trends show a positive improvement and that over the last four years Halling has achieved the highest cumulative total in Medway. The governors, staff and parents take pride in the childrens attainments which have been reached through an ethos of hard work and high expectations. There are a variety of extra curricular activities available for the children e.g. football, netball, keyboard, choir, aerobics, maths and computer clubs. The teachers are fully committed to providing a broad, balanced curriculum as well as developing the personal and social skills of all children. Our latest OFSTED report noted the following as strengths of the school :-

  • Quality of teaching
  • Behaviour of the children
  • Relationships between pupils and staff
  • Pupils are eager and well motivated

The above make the recipe for success and make Halling a happy and welcoming school.
