Welcome to the Kent College Infant & Junior School

The school is situated in delightful grounds on the edge of the historic City of Canterbury. Our Senior School, to which most of our pupils transfer at 11, is just over a mile away. The main school building was once the home of the renowned Victorian artist Thomas Sidney Cooper R.A. and he lived here for 50 years, spending much time and money in developing the glorious gardens in which our children can play.

The Channel Tunnel and ports are only half an hour’s drive away, as is access to Eurostar. Central London can be reached in one and a half hours.

We have a small but very comfortable Boarding House within the main building, and welcome full, weekly or occasional boarders from the age of seven upwards.

Children can join our Nursery at any time after their third birthday, and can come full time from that age, though many parents choose to start with just a couple of mornings a week. They then progress through to the Infant and finally Junior departments, full details of which are shown on this site. Other children join us at any age between four and ten.

We have an excellent academic record, with consistently strong results in the Kent Test, and many of our pupils win scholarships, for academic, artistic, musical or sporting excellence, to our Senior School. We are also able to offer specialist teaching to children with dyslexia.

Our cultural and sporting traditions are strong and we offer a huge range of clubs and activities, at lunchtime, after school and, for those who want it, on Saturday mornings. These are complemented by a variety of visits and excursions, both locally and abroad.

Above all we are a caring and welcoming school with an outstanding pastoral reputation which derives from our Christian heritage. Our children are challenged and stretched, but always encouraged and supported.

Come and explore our site. We’re sure you’ll be convinced that Kent College Infant & Junior School is the ideal starting point for every child’s educational journey.

NURSERY

Our Nursery provides a caring yet stimulating start to a child’s journey through school. Children can join at any point after their third birthday. Some parents choose to go straight to a full-time basis while others choose to start with just one or two mornings a week.

An Early Years specialist teacher oversees the three sections of nursery, supported by a well-qualified team of Nursery practitioners. Our outstanding facilities enable us to offer an excellent and appropriate introduction to school life in an idyllic environment. Planned teaching through play and exploration is based on ‘stepping stones’ mapped out in Early Learning Goals. Our children move forward in personal, social and emotional development while extending their skills in communication, language and literacy. They are introduced to mathematics and helped to grow in knowledge and understanding of the world. At the same time we foster their physical and creative development.

The foundation stage leads to the National Curriculum on which the School bases its learning strategies and teaching. However our independent status allows us the flexibility to broaden out our children’s opportunities. This structure provides a solid base for their introduction to the greater challenges of the Infant Department.

In November 2004 our Nursery and Reception Departments were inspected by OFSTED.  In all six categories of Educational and Personal Development reported on the school was judged 'very good' - the highest possible rating.  Here are some of the Inspector's comments:

*    'Children are making very good progress towards the early learning goals.'

*    'The quality of teaching is very good.'

*    'Very good use is made of the many available resources.'

*    'Staff have positive relationships with children.'

*    'Behaviour is very good.'

*    'Partnership with parents and carers is very good.'

INFANTS

The bright and spacious Infant classrooms provide an environment which challenges, leads and supports a child in the acquisition of skills and knowledge. Experienced teachers work with small classes to ensure all children have the opportunity to develop both learning techniques and confidence. Assistants are on hand to work alongside teachers in Reception and Year One. Specialist teachers deliver French, Music, PE, Games and Expressive Arts and our children make full use of our impressive facilities in these areas.

Emphasis is placed on providing a well-planned, stimulating curriculum which is related to the children’s experiences. This allows us to foster independence in each child whilst teaching the importance of working together in groups.

JUNIORS

Entry into the Junior years opens up an even wider range of opportunities for our children.

The form tutor continues to welcome each child in the morning, closely monitors their overall development and takes pastoral responsibility for their welfare. Our small classes ensure there is time for each pupil to receive individual attention and help.

A broad yet balanced curriculum enables each child to enjoy their lessons and make excellent progress in the core subjects of Maths, English and Science, and the School achieves outstanding academic results.

A sound grasp of the basics is vital for laying the foundations for future academic progress, but the breadth of our curriculum offers pupils the chance to develop into caring, creative and high-achieving young people.

In Years Five and Six all subjects are taught by subject specialists so that our children learn to work in a way which prepares them for the exciting new challenges of Senior School life.

SENIORS

On to the Kent College Senior School

Despite the mile and a quarter that lies between the two campuses Kent College has always described itself as ‘one school on two sites.’ This is reflected not only in the fact that the large majority of Year 6 in the Junior School transfer to the Senior School each September, but also because the schools share the same Christian heritage, the same ideals and even the same Board of Governors. Children in the Infant and Junior School make regular visits ‘up the hill,’ they use many of the Senior School facilities and collaborate with Senior pupils in a wide range of activities. This familiarity with life in the Senior School makes the transfer at 11 a far less daunting prospect than most children face in going to a totally new secondary school.

Kent College Senior School occupies a glorious semi-rural site in an elevated position on the edge of Canterbury, and currently has some 470 pupils, approximately one third of whom are boarders. Typically around 30 different countries are represented in the School’s boarding population and this adds richness and cultural diversity to the life of the School. It has been co-educational since the 1970s.

The School has excellent academic results and enjoys an outstanding reputation for its music and drama. A wide variety of sports are played and it has a particular strength in hockey, where a number of National titles have been won in recent years. Its range of extra-curricular clubs and societies offers an almost bewildering choice of activities to encourage the development of well-rounded individuals.

Above all though Kent College is a friendly and welcoming school. Its pupils are certainly challenged to develop the full potential of every talent they are born with, but they are unfailingly supported in all their endeavours. It seeks to send out into the world young people who are confident yet responsible, committed yet compassionate.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR

Beyond the Classroom

No-one will deny that academic success is a key measure of how well any school is performing, but it is certainly not the only measure.

At Kent College there is a clear objective to develop the ‘whole person’ and that process starts in the Infant and Junior School as our children are introduced to a wide range of artistic and sporting activities. These take place during the school day, after school and, for those who want it, on Saturday mornings. Our huge range of clubs and societies is complemented by a programme of visits and excursions, and together these give every child unrivalled opportunities to expand their horizons and take a keen interest in the world about them.

Use the menu on this page to find out more about all the exciting activities our children get involved with. You’ll see why they so much look forward to coming to school!  A particular highlight each year is the Arts Festival, which takes place in the Spring Term.  This covers the visual arts, music, drama and dance and the children participate enthusiastically, as well as benefitting from visiting artists and performers.  Some of the events are staged in collaboration with Senior School pupils, which greatly helps our children grow in confidence.
