The Governors, staff and pupils of Newlands would like to extend a warm welcome to all visitors to our school. We are proud of our school and all that it has to offer.
Newlands is quite a large primary school situated on the border of Ramsgate, where housing is still reasonably priced.
We have a very stable staff, supportive governing body (praised by Ofsted) and children who are praised by visitors to the school. At our last Ofsted inspection over one hundred parents attended the parents’ meeting with the Registered Inspector.
The school has an AST on its staff who supports ICT development in the local area. In addition another of our staff has applied for this status but in PSHE.
With the professional expertise and enthusiasm of the teaching staff we endeavour to produce an environment which children find secure and will enable them to achieve their full potential.
Children come from all parts of Thanet for their schooling at Newlands and in turn our Year 6 children leave to join a whole range of secondary schools. This area still has selection with an ‘eleven plus’ test each January.
A school of our size naturally caters for the whole range of ability, however our percentage of children with special educational needs is much higher than average. Our provision for such children is wide ranging having in-house facilities for speech and language tuition and emotional support. In turn it is only a few years ago when we secured a scholarship for one of our Year 6 boys to attend a top public school.
Our last Ofsted inspection was in June 2004 and we are pleased by the first five words of the report.....'This is a good school';.
The school fabric has been much improved over the last few years with two major improvement/replacement schemes. The last removing all our temporary accommodation and replacing this with an £850,000 block for our Year 5 and 6 pupils. In September 2006 we shall see the opening of a new Children’s Centre on site. This has been hard fought for and for the first time in this area we shall have cohesive educational provision at this most important stage of a child’s development.
n order to secure a good positive beginning our foundation stage provision is excellent and we are proud to be an Effective Early Learning School (certified by the University of Worcester). In addition we have Healthy School status and will be seeking an Artsmark in the near future.
Newlands is part of a fourteen school (both primary and secondary) Excellence Cluster and the current Headteacher is vice-chair of this group. This in turn led to BIP funding and the school has been able to improve its mentoring provision for its pupils. Together with a neighbouring Academy the school shares a £100,000 FSES grant and supports its community well as a result. All such grant funding has two more years to run.
On site to promote our community work is a building donated to us by Pfizer, this being provided as a result of an initiative by Mr Curran, the school's Deputy Headteacher.
In Year 3 we are currently working with a county based AST to introduce a Building Learning Power initiative in the wish to raise attainment in a year group where this is particularly low. |
