Welcome to the Pilgrims` Way Primary School!

The governors, staff and children welcome you to Pilgrims' Way Primary School.
We are proud of our school and the achievements of the children. We expect a great deal from them in terms of their academic achievements and their behaviour and it gives us pleasure to see our expectations realised.

Pilgrims' Way Primary School, Canterbury

In return we will ensure everything is done to enable all children to achieve their full potential. We will also do our best to make their time at Pilgrims' Way as enjoyable, stimulating and memorable as possible.

Our vision is to make Pilgrims' Way a beacon amongst schools. To do this we will build unstoppable teams where the driving force is a passion to create a school where all the children and all our staff will be able to achieve success and accomplish what may appear, at the outset, to be the impossible.

ADMISSION

Age of Admission

Children are able to come to school at the beginning of the school year in which they are 5. Special arrangements are made to ease their start in school. These are publicised at the Year R parents meeting in the summer term prior to school entry.

Admission to Pilgrims' Way School

Pilgrims' Way is a popular school close to the Chaucer Technology School and local Grammar Schools. Children are admitted according to the Kent County Council Admissions Procedure. Admission for children who require designated provision is through consultation with the Headteacher or SENCO.

Admission Numbers

The school admission limit for each intake group is 58, which means that there are usually about 380 children on the school roll. There are fourteen classes with about 28 children per class. Classes with physically disabled pupils have extra support from support assistants. The reception classes both have full-time teaching assistant support.

Appeals against admission decisions
Parents wishing to appeal against an admission decision should write to the Area Education Office.

Pre-school visits for new children
In the Summer term before your child starts school, an invitation will be sent out for you and your child to attend a series of 'Pre-school Club' meetings. This will enable your child to become familiar with coming into school and for both of you to meet his/her new teacher.

CURRICULUM

The Curriculum at Pilgrims' Way is organised and planned within the guidelines of the National Curriculum. Copies are available for you to look at in the school reception area.

Children in their Reception year are not required to follow the National Curriculum, but follow the Foundation Stage curriculum guidance.

Children in Years 1 to 6 follow the National Curriculum, which includes the 5 core subjects of English, Maths, Science, RE and ICT. The foundation subjects of History, Geography, DT, P.E., Music, Art and Citizenship are also taught according to the National Curriculum.

Much of your child's work in school will be practical, investigational and based on solving problems related to real situations. However, each National Curriculum subject area has several essential skills that children will need to develop in order to progress. At Pilgrims' Way these skills will be specifically taught as part of a continuous and planned programme of work in each Key Stage.

UNIFORM

We feel that children have a much better sense of belonging and a better attitude to schoolwork when they are dressed in the school colours. Our school colour scheme is burgundy, grey and white. Burgundy sweatshirts and grey polo shirts, embroidered with the school logo, are available by ordering from the school office.

Winter uniform: grey skirts, tunic or grey trousers; school sweatshirt or burgundy or grey jumper or cardigan; white blouse or white or grey polo shirt or shirt; white or grey socks.

Summer uniform: white or grey short sleeved shirt or polo shirt. (Please note that another tshirt should be provided for PE activities). Tailored grey shorts or red or blue gingham dress.

Coloured t-shirts with motifs, jeans, cycling shorts, play shoes etc. are unsuitable for school wear and are not allowed.

Trainers are optional for outside games, but must not be worn to school as ordinary shoes.
