Sackville is a school that places great importance on helping each student achieve his or her best and the following pages will introduce you to our splendid grounds, our curriculum and most importantly, our students.
Sackville students are cheerful, confident young men and women who work hard and enjoy their school life. Sackville, formerly Foxbush House, was built in 1866 for Charles Fitch Kemp, a London Chartered Accountant. The Charing Cross to Tonbridge railway line was in the process of construction and the purchase enabled him to combine his London career with his ambition to be a country landowner.
He and his wife, Sarah, had ten children (4 sons and 6 daughters) and a large staff of servants and gardeners to maintain the house and its extensive grounds. He kept a pack of harriers in kennels beyond the kitchen garden and employed his own huntsman. He played an important role in local affairs, being the first Chairman of the Hildenborough Parish Council when it was formed in 1894 and a churchwarden from 1869 until his death in 1907.
In 1912 the estate was sold to Barnett Lewis, a wealthy diamond merchant, who installed oak panelling in several of the reception rooms. On his death in 1929, the property was bought by Herbert Rae, whose wife's family coat of arms is on the fireplace in the entrance hall.
During the Second World War, the house was requisitioned as the headquarters of the 59th Newfoundland Heavy Regiment, Royal Artillery. From 1949 to 1970 it was the Convent of Our Lady School, which had moved from Cannon Lane, Tonbridge. In 1970, St Thomas's School moved to the site from Sevenoaks, and later became Foxbush School. This in turn was replaced by Sackville School in 1987.

The Department of Education has set core subjects for study and standards of attainment with testing procedures for schools in England and Wales. At Sackville we meet and exceed all Government specifications and requirements.
We have a broad academic curriculum giving priority to imaginative and self motivated work. Students are grouped according to their learning needs in academic subjects.
All students study the core subjects -
Mathematics, English, Science and French, together with Geography, History, Design Technology (Resistant Materials, Graphics and Food), Art, Information and Communication Technology, Music and Religious Studies. Personal and Social Education, Physical Education and a wide variety of Games complete the curriculum.
The curriculum is designed to prepare students for their GCSE subjects, where they are taught methodology, research techniques, coursework requirements and most importantly, self motivation.
The broad curriculum continues with the addition of German as an optional second language. At the end of the year students take the Standard Attainment Tests in English, Mathematics and Science. Students also sit the Royal Society of Arts Computer Literacy examination.
This is the all important GCSE time, when students select and prepare for their major public examinations. Core subjects continue, but now students may select up to four more subjects from: Geography, History, a second Foreign Language, Information & Communication Technology, Music, Art, Resistant Materials, Graphics, Food Technology, Sports studies, Religious Studies, Media Studies and Business Studies.
The Sixth Form offers students the opportunity to choose Advanced Level courses from a range of 14 different subjects. All students follow a course in General Studies which can be one of their chosen exam topics. In addition, participation in the Young Enterprise Scheme is required. A wide variety of sports is available and Personal and Social Education form important elements of the curriculum. Further details are available in a separate booklet.
At Sackville INDIVIDUAL GCSE PROGRAMMES are determined by extensiver consultation between the student, parents, teachers and career advisors
Participation in a wide range of sports and games is an important part of life at Sackville. Being part of a team is valuable in a childs social, as well as physical, development. We offer a wide range of individual and team sports allowing each student to select an activity in which they can excel and enjoy.
Students have represented the school at district, county, regional and national levels in athletics, cricket, cross country, football, golf, rugby and tennis.
As well as the traditional school sports of athletics, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders, rugby, swimming and tennis, we offer many others in the Activities programme, including abseiling, archery, badminton, baseball, basketball, boule, cross country running, dry slope skiing, fishing, golf, riding, rock climbing, roller hockey, shooting, table tennis and more!
Each student can explore and develop his or her potential through our Activity programme whilst the personal interests and enthusiasms of our teachers inspire out young people to explore new avenues and find something special in themselves.
All students are encouraged to participate in as many activities as possible
First and foremost, we welcome students to Sackville when we and you the parents are sure that it is the right place for your child and that he or she will flourish with us.
The formal admission points are at the beginning of the academic Years 7, 9 and 12.
Prospective students are assessed in verbal and non-verbal reasoning, Mathematics, English and by interview, always taking into account reports from their previous schools.
Entry is via the Public Schools Common Entrance examination and an interview the preceding term.
Pre qualification requirements are;
5 grade C (or higher) GCSE passes and grade B (or higher) in the selected A-level subjects. Students must pass our interview process prior to acceptance.
Admission at other stages and mid-year
Under special circumstances we welcome new students at other entry times. Each application is treated on its own merit and is subject to any interviews, tests or reports that Sackville might require
