A little about us!
We believe South Avenue Junior School is a happy and friendly school. The school caters for children of all abilities and enjoys a good reputation in the local community. At South Avenue Junior School we: *Have a team of teachers, Head Teacher, teaching assistants, secretary, midday supervisors, caretaker and parent helpers, who have the needs of the children foremost in all they do. *Believe in praise, encouragement and reward for hard work, effort, success, good behaviour and care for others. *Are a caring community which tries to support and encourage each other, not only in work, but also in play. We think of others less fortunate than ourselves by supporting charities. *Provide a well-organised, secure environment which is conducive to learning and social development. *Have high expectations of our children, not only in work, but also in play. *Encourage children to be responsible for themselves in work and behaviour. *Are very fortunate in being set in extensive grounds that provide a very pleasant environment in which to work and play. *Have good resources in all areas of the curriculum. Our resources and equipment are continually developed and improved. Each classroom has at least four computers. *Welcome and encourage parents to take an active part in school work and life. The support of our parents is greatly appreciated and valued. Regular newsletters maintain contact. *Are supported by the 'Friends' association, which helps by organising fund raising and social events. Their funds have greatly enhanced our resources and equipment. *Have a variety of clubs, which give children the opportunity to develop their interests, skills, and widen their experiences. They are also fun! We believe South Avenue Junior School is a good school and good to belong to.

The National Curriculum in Key Stage 2 consists of 10 subjects which all children must study at school. The subjects are Mathematics, English, Science, Design and Technology, Information and Communication Technology, History, Geography, Music, Art and Design, and Physical Education.
These subjects are called "foundation" subjects with English, Mathematics and Science also being known as the "core" subjects.
Personal, Social and Health Education and Drama are catered for in a cross-curricular approach.
Progress in all areas of the curriculum is monitored and assessed, particularly in the Core subjects.
We must also offer Religious Education (R.E.) and provide daily collective worship, but parents can decide whether or not their child takes part.
The teaching staff is fully committed to developing the curriculum for the maximum benefit of the children. To help this, they attend courses, meet with co-ordinators from other schools, hold regular curriculum staff meetings, visit other schools and so on, to improve professionalism and to keep up to date with educational initiatives. |
