St Mildred`s Primary Infant School

Welcome to the St Mildred’s School website! We hope you find it useful and informative!

St. Mildred’s is a three form entry infant school situated in a quiet residential area of Broadstairs, Kent.

The school is organized into nine classes, each of thirty children and is regularly over-subscribed.

Our Mission Statement

At St Mildred’s we believe that education is for life and aim for every child to reach their potential in an environment where they feel safe, secure, happy and confident.

High self-esteem will be promoted through praise and encouragement in a calm, purposeful atmosphere where shouting voices are discouraged.

We will provide a curriculum that is broad, exciting and challenges pupils across the full range of national expectations with equality of provision and learning regardless of race, gender or age.

Every member of our school community will feel valued and able to contribute to school life working in partnership with parents, colleagues, the LEA and the wider community.

CURRICULUM

Foundation Stage

Children in Reception year follow the Foundation Stage Curriculum. This is organised into 6 areas of learning:

  • Personal social and emotional development

  • Communication, language and literacy

  • Mathematical development

  • Knowledge and understanding of the world

  • Physical development

  • Creative development

Children work towards the Early Learning Goals through teacher guided activities and child initiated purposeful play to enable them to become confident, independent and enquiring individuals.

Years One and Two

Yr 1 and 2 follow the National Curriculum which includes the five core subjects of English, Mathematics, Science, Information Control Technology (ICT) and R.E. Arrangements in school allow for these subjects to be taught for a substantial part of the week, often through themes and project work, but also the Literacy and Numeracy strategies. The foundation subjects are outlined later in this section. All documents relating to the Curriculum are available in school for your perusal. Parents are informed of the topics covered each term. There is a full set of current curriculum and management policies relating to this school available for you to see on request.

The emphasis is on active exploration and discovery and the highest quality of work is encouraged at all times from observation through personal experience to self- expression. The children learn the basic skills of Reading, Language, Handwriting and Numeracy.

The Cursive Style of handwriting is taught throughout the school. Handwriting has high priority and is not taught as a separate subject, but strongly linked to art and P.E. We use the 'Write Dance' programme to develop motor skills, from the foundation stage, required for fluent, legible handwriting.

UNIFORM

School uniform is not compulsory but advisable and encouraged. The school colours are navy, grey or white. Any combination of theses, which is practical, is acceptable. The school sweatshirts, fleece jackets and polo shirts, bearing the school logo, are available through the school shop which is held on Wednesdays at 2.30 pm - 3.00pm in the Reception area. Black canvas book bags for library books and blue canvas book bags for core reading books can also be purchased through the school shop, along with P E bags, hats and painting aprons. These bear the school logo, which helps the public identify the returning point for those that are lost outside the school premises. We recommend the wearing of short trousers, especially in the summer. Open-toed sandals are actively discouraged for the children's own safety.

Plimsolls are necessary for some physical activities and games. May we recommend the type with elasticated tops, as they are so much easier for the children to handle. Please note that if plimsolls are not available or do not fit, children will take part bare-footed. Vests, tee-shirts and shorts are worn for these lessons.

Please provide your child with an apron. An adult’s old shirt makes an excellent craft/painting smock, especially if the sleeves have been cut to the right length and the cuffs elasticated. This is a highly practical garment for many activities and can cut down quite dramatically on the weekly washing.
