St Peter’s is a co-educational Infants’ School, educating children between the ages of 4½ and 7 years. We have a maximum of 120 children on roll at any one time.
At the end of their time with us children transfer to a local Junior School.
St Peter's has a unique position in the area in that parents have a number of options to apply to for Junior placement.
Whilst our nearest school is the Delce Junior School, other options include Balfour Junior School and other local Primary Schools if places are available.
A Walking Bus operates every morning leaving St Peter's at 8.35am and walking down to the Delce Junior School in time for the start of their school day.

| Behaviour
At St Peter’s we expect children to be in charge of their behaviour and we do all that we can to encourage them to do so.
A great deal of emphasis is placed on our GOLDEN RULES, which are displayed in every classroom and in the Hall.

Caring crew:
Children in our Year 2 all have the opportunity to be a member of our 'Caring Crew'. Whilst a member they have extra responsibilities within the school.
Ethos
We have a very positive ethos and have a system of class and individual rewards designed to raise self-esteem and encourage children to want to behave well. A copy of the school Behaviour Policy is located in the school office for you to refer to should you wish.
As part of our strong philosophy of teamwork we place a lot of emphasis on working together with you as parents. Should any behavioural problems arise you would be consulted and a joint plan of action formulated.
There is a home/school agreement that we ask all parents to sign as part of the strong liaison between parents and school. This is not a formal contract, more a statement of aims for each party.

| Admissions
At St Peter’s there are 40 places available each academic year and each of those places is allocated according to the LEA agreed procedure.
New children are admitted in September with a phased Induction depending on their date of birth.
More information is available from Mrs. Williams in the school office.
Prospective parents are very welcome to visit the school to meet the staff and pupils.

Induction
Starting school is one of the most important experiences in your child’s life and our aim is to make it as enjoyable as possible.
Prior to starting school there will be opportunities for the children to come into school for taster sessions when they can begin to familiarise themselves with the building. This is an opportunity for you and them to meet their teacher and the Teaching Assistant (TA).
In addition there is the opportunity to have a home visit where the teacher and the TA will visit you in your home. We have found that this has been a very enjoyable opportunity for the children to get to know their teacher in secure and familiar surroundings and an ideal opportunity for you to ask any lingering questions.
Our Induction process also involves starting the children part time initially as we have found this is less traumatic for the children in the long run and allows them to get to know us at a more relaxed pace.
The Foundation Stage
Children in the Foundation Stage (Reception) are working towards the Early Learning Goals as set out by the Government in the Early Years curriculum document. This curriculum is designed to feed into the National Curriculum.
Our Early Years curriculum is carefully structured to ensure that there are opportunities for the children to engage in activities that allow them to practise, build on and extend their knowledge, skills and experiences. Therefore the teaching emphasis is mainly practical with recording of work introduced as appropriate. Play is used to support children whilst they are exploring and developing their understanding of the world. It is a vital part of children’s learning. |
| At St Peter’s our curriculum is mainly taught through topics or themes that are each usually half a term in length. In addition we usually also teach a Literacy and Numeracy session every day in line with directives from the Government.
The work that the children do is differentiated to take account of the varying abilities and experiences of the children and many different teaching strategies are used. We encourage children to make independent attempts at the work provided (under supervision) and to take some responsibility for their own learning.
Should you have questions concerning the curriculum appointments can be made with the class teacher who will be happy to discuss them with you.
The Headteacher is also available to discuss any concerns or worries that you may have about the curriculum should the class teacher be unable to help.
The Governing Body Complaints Committee deal with any issues concerning the curriculum that parents may feel have not been appropriately solved by the staff or Headteacher. There are further appeal stages to the Local Education Authority (LEA) and finally to the Secretary of State for Education. Leaflets explaining these procedures can be obtained from the Area Education Office.
In line with statutory requirements we teach the National Curriculum at St Peter’s.
The National Curriculum lays down what the Government expects children to learn at each stage of the education process from 5-16. It is set out in Key Stages and the children at St Peter’s Infant School are in Key Stage 1.

| At St Peter’s we have a strong team ethos and as part of this we strongly encourage the wearing of our uniform. This gives the children a strong sense of identity.
Our uniform consists of:
Boys: Grey trousers/shorts, white/grey shirt or white polo shirt, school sweatshirt or maroon sweater, grey/ white socks.
Girls: Grey skirt/pinafore dress, white polo shirt of blouse, school sweatshirt or maroon cardigan/jumper, maroon/red checked dress for Summer.
Shoes should be sensible and appropriate for daily school wear. We find that buckles or Velcro are easier for children to manage if they are unable to tie laces as yet.
We have a stock of school sweatshirts and polo shirts that can be purchased from the school office. If we do not have the size you require in stock then we can order them.
In addition we have a stock of Baseball and Legionnaire caps with the school name on them for sale at £3 and £3.50.
We also sell Book Bags with the school name on them for £3.80. These are particularly useful as they are large enough to hold reading books and lunch boxes and are small enough to fit into the limited space available.
In addition we sell School PE Bags at a cost of £3.20.
Please ensure that all of your child’s property is labelled as it is very difficult to reunite children with their things when there are so many items all the same. Thank you. |
