The school is set in five acres of beautiful gardens and woodland close to Sevenoaks station and the town, in the south-east of England. The school is an educational charitable trust, administered by our board of governors and trustees.
Our founder, Miss Makin, established a school that has a very special quality. We have high expectations and a consistent record of achievement with all abilities.
There is a genuinely warm and friendly atmosphere at The Granville and a real sense of belonging. We aim to keep this traditional atmosphere while remaining innovative in our approach to the curriculum and the education of the children in our charge.

The Granville School is an independent day preparatory school for girls from age 3 to 11 years and for boys from 3 to 4. The school motto is ‘Caritas et Pietas’ (Love and Service).
 Our educational mission is to realise the full potential of every child by developing knowledge, confidence and self-reliance within a supportive and happy school community. | Our Aims and Educational Purpose
 
At The Granville we encourage children to develop into caring, self-reliant and knowledgeable girls who are well prepared for future challenges. We do this through education and by example. We aim to:

- Encourage a sense of enquiry and an ability to solve problems
- Establish the principles of courtesy and consideration
- Teach the importance of service to others
We believe the early lessons of education to be the basis of all learning and behaviour. We believe concentration is an exercise of mind and character. Without this, nothing can be accomplished and therefore it is taught from the very beginning. Listening and speaking are valued highly. We aim to develop and realise each child’s full potential through attention to individual needs and an emphasis on learning as fun.
We are a non-selective school and provide a full and balanced programme that includes the requirements of the National Curriculum but also gives a greater breadth of learning. We educate our girls to:

The Granville pupil begins his or her school life in the Foundation Stage of our Early Years department, where boys and girls together enjoy the benefits of individual teaching in a happy and inspiring environment. Qualified and experienced staff provide a caring, ordered, and stimulating atmosphere where children’s natural curiosity is nurtured to the point where they are ready to acquire and develop more formal skills.
 The emphasis is on learning basic skills particularly in literacy and numeracy, through play-based activities. Teaching is through encouragement and praise. Creativity is nurtured through art and craft work and class music lessons.
The pupils’ knowledge and understanding of the world is developed through the use of our woodland grounds and by walks in the local environment. ‘Fun’ French is introduced in small groups through songs, games and rhymes. Social skills are developed through activities that promote emotional, moral and spiritual development.
Physical development is encouraged by use of the lovely adventure playground and ride-on toys, as well as by the specialist P.E. teaching in our gym and swimming pool.

Age 5-7: the joy of learning
The Junior department of Classes Reception, 1 and 2 build on the foundations laid in the nursery. The classes are generally around twenty girls with Classroom Assistants in each class. The main educational emphasis is still on developing reading, writing and number work. At age 7 in Year 2 the girls undertake the Government Keystage 1 S.A.T. tests.
Pupils` understanding of the world around them is developed further through topic work in science, geography and history with educational visits and cross curricular work is enhanced by art and D.T. Specialist teaching in I.C.T., Drama, French, Music and P.E. is included in the curriculum. The teaching and curriculum, whilst maintaining certain valuable traditions, incorporates many recent educational ideas. Whilst we have taken on board requirements of the National Curriculum, we are working at levels well above its requirements.
Social understanding is developed through co-operation and respect with each other. One of our most enduring and valued traditions is the programme of Granville festivals. These are whole school occasions which celebrate various events throughout the year through music, drama, poetry and dance.
School assemblies are an important part of learning about beliefs and other cultures and there is a structured R.E. programme that keeps its emphasis on Christianity whist considering other faiths and festivals.

It is at this age that pupils are assessed for extra help by specialist remedial teachers, should a class teacher think that it is appropriate. The school also caters for the gifted child and can offer the specialist teaching that the most able children might require. | |
| Age 7-11: a strong adacemic grounding
The range, and the depth of academic challenge increases in Classes 3 & 4. It is enhanced by a number of extra-curricular clubs and activities in sport, art, music and hobbies. In Year 5 there is a small intake of girls and the classes are split into two smaller mixed ability groups of about 12-14, who remain together in Year 6.
Intellectual stimulus, skilled teaching, encouragement and the best of resources and modern equipment produce a high standard of work. Good study habits are nurtured through regular homework and class tests. The emphasis is on the core subjects of literacy, numeracy, science and I.C.T. but the class work is now differentiated in numeracy and literacy, and involves team teaching with specialist teachers. This allows flexibility of groups and topics.
 By Year 6, Granville girls will be able to undertake independent research, will be competent I.C.T. users, will have reached their full potential and will have attained schools of their choice. Pupils are prepared for scholarship and Common Entrance exams and for the 11+ exam for entry to senior schools. They will also have learnt to take responsibility and to care for others through service to charities.
High standards are achieved by Year 6. Granville girls will be able to undertake independent research and will have reached their full potential. All subjects are now taught by specialist teachers. In Literacy there is a strongly academic approach. A love of literature is encouraged, with an ability to question and challenge, frequently to a level beyond National Curriculum requirements. From the beginning, secure basic language skills ensure an ability to undertake independent learning. In Maths, the basic skills are secure. Pupils will enjoy problem solving and an investigative approach to their work. In science, the pupils enjoy excellent specialist facilities and will experience practical fieldwork as well as data-handling and recording. In ICT, pupils are taught to develop skills and apply them, using up to date facilities with specialist teaching.
The syllabus also includes the teaching of History, Geography, Art. Music, French, Design Technology, Drama, PHSE (Personal, Social and Health Education), Citizenship and Religious Education.
