Walderslade Girls` School

A commitment to learning

Walderslade Girls' School is a non-selective LEA maintained school which admits 160 pupils into year seven each year. The school is based on one site in several subject specific teaching blocks, each of which is attractively furnished and well equipped to meet the requirements of each aspect of the curriculum.

At Walderslade Girls' School the highest standards of work and behaviour are expected. In order to achieve this, a caring, secure, purposeful and well ordered environment is provided by the committed staff.

The girls are encouraged to take responsibility for their learning and progress and, in doing so, they develop their confidence, self-esteem and independence. This enables them to move smoothly from school into further or higher education or into work.

The achievement of our aims was recognised during our most recent OFSTED inspection:

  • The attitudes of pupils to their work and relationships with the other pupils are very positive
  • Pupils achieve well as a result of good teaching
  • All pupils are valued and the school does much to raise their aspirations and motivation

Specialist Status

We are hopeful of obtaining Specialist Status during this academic year and have so far raised over £27,000 through various school activities to which we thank all involved. 

Our specialism has been agreed in the areas of Humanities combined with Expressive Arts and therefore it will incorporate various departments around the school including English, Religious Studies, Music, Art, Dance & Drama, and Work Related Learning.

AIMS

  • To provide a relevant and stimulating education which engages pupils’ enthusiasm, promotes the highest possible achievement and equips them with a lifelong enjoyment and of earning.
  • To encourage and cultivate an awareness of moral, spiritual, social and cultural values which will foster a respect for of others opinions and beliefs.
  • To raise the aspirations of pupils to provide them with the confidence and flexibility to achieve economic independence in a changing technological world.
  • To foster the holistic development of each pupil to give them the skills and confidence to make a positive contribution to their community within and beyond school.
  • To prepare pupils to fulfil their role as responsible citizens in a democratic society.
  • To encourage an ongoing appreciation in physical, aesthetic and creative activities.
  • To maintain the optimum learning environment accessible to all members of the school community through the effective management of resources.

These aims, revised by the school, staff and Governors in 2006, enshrine the five outcomes for “Every Child Matters”:

UNIFORM

The school uniform gives our pupils a sense of pride and purpose, and prepares them for the world of work.

  • All pupils in Years 7 to 11 are required to wear full school uniform at all times. Post 16 students are expected to wear smart clothes appropriate for a business environment.
  • The school has a very strict uniform policy and pupils are expected to wear the uniform every day.
  • No jewellery may be worn, with the exception of a watch. Pupils with pierced ears may wear one small plain gold or silver stud (no more than 3mm in diameter) per lobe of the ear. No other studs may be worn. All other forms of body piercing are forbidden in school.
  • No nail polish may be worn. No make-up may be worn in Years 7-9, however from Year 10 upwards pupils may wear foundation make-up and mascara.
  • Hair restraints must be plain navy blue.

Each item of uniform must be clearly labelled with the owner's name.

CURRICULUM

Key Stage 3 (Years 7,8 and 9)

Key Stage three is a period of transition. At primary school, our girls will mainly have been taught all their subjects by their class teacher in the same classroom. During year 7 girls will become used to being taught each subject by specialist teachers in specialist rooms. By the end of year 9 students will be fully prepared to embark on a course of GCSE studies in core subjects and a number that they have opted for themselves.

At Walderslade Girls School, our students are set according to performance. In each set, girls will be able to make progress at their optimum rate and resources and support can be targeted at the groups where they can prove most beneficial. The sets are reviewed following end of year examinations. Moves between sets are possible at other times, if it becomes apparent during the year that a girl is working at a standard of very different set (higher or lower). The sets in key stage three are the same for all subjects. This means that some of the familiarity of the primary school environment - being in the same teaching group - is preserved.

During Key Stage Three additional support is given to those students who entered school without having met the nationally expected standard of level 4 in their Key Stage 2 SATs in the core subjects.

Particular attention is paid to the teaching of a modern foreign language to all pupils and to their development in art and drama, each of which leads to a high degree of success and a resultant increase in the pupils' confidence and self-esteem. In year 9, the top two sets are taught Spanish as well as French and Spanish is then available as an option subject at GCSE.

Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11)

Key Stage Four is the last period of compulsory education. The vast majority of students are equipped through our curriculum to progress to further study at 16+ (Key Stage Five). However, we also ensure that the minority who leave us to begin employment are properly prepared with the skills and aptitudes for the world of work.

We give sufficient time and support to the teaching of the three core subjects [English, Mathematics and Science] to enable all pupils to be entered for these subjects at GCSE level, since competence in language, numeracy and scientific method is needed throughout the rest of the curriculum and in all aspects of adult life.

The other foundation subjects, together with religious education, and citizenship provide the pupils with additional opportunities for achievement, with an understanding and tolerance of others and with an awareness of their own capabilities.

Our pupils' many successes are positively and publicly recognised and their numerous achievements prepare them fully for further education in our own joint sixth form (with Greenacre School) or with other 16+ providers.

The Key Stage Four curriculum is divided between a common core comprising, taken by all students, and a set of options from which students pick three GCSEs.

Walderslade Girls' School aims to develop the pupils' existing skills, to extend their knowledge and understanding and to provide them with new opportunities. The school is committed to a high standard of teaching and learning and to the raising of overall standards.
