Welcome to The Perse School for Girls

Core Values

Perse Girls aims to foster a love of learning, developing inquiring, reflective, open-minded young people, prepared for the opportunities of the twenty-first century and equipped to play an active role in an increasingly international world.

To ensure that we deliver this educational experience, we have identified four core values:
  • Innovation and excellence in teaching and learning
  • Providing an environment to enhance learning
  • Promoting self-esteem and celebrating achievement
  • Broadening horizons

The school runs a very successful minibus service from and to the Trumpington and Babraham Park and Ride sites on the outskirts of Cambridge. This has many benefits including reducing the number of cars using the streets around school.

JUNIORS

At Perse Girls Junior School we hope your daughter will discover a real love of learning. We strive to make every lesson inspiring, engaging and fun. We recognise that your daughter is an individual, with individual talents and individual interests.

Education is about far more than passing exams and in the Junior School we prepare your daughter, not only for the next stage of her education at Perse Girls, but also for the wider world. We aim to stimulate enquiring minds in an open, caring and happy environment, encouraging an enthusiasm for knowledge and skills, broadening horizons and fostering imagination and initiative.

Everyone faces challenges at school and we ensure your daughter is given the time, space, support and guidance she needs. Co-operation between home and school is essential to effective pastoral care and Junior School staff are always happy to discuss issues whenever they arise.

We are incredibly lucky to have such a thoroughly modern school set in the centre of one of the most historic cities in Britain. Many have said our Junior School is a ‘hidden gem’. Our own facilities, which include the DT workshop, the all-weather sports field and the nature reserve, are matched by the extended classroom on our doorstep in Cambridge. From the Botanic Gardens and University Concert Hall to museums and galleries, Perse girls quickly discover that learning is a very hands-on, active experience.

I hope you enjoy exploring this website, discovering more about what makes this school so special and what it means to be part of our school community. However, I would strongly encourage you to visit the school, for a personal tour, and to see for yourself what discovering a love of learning looks like in the real world.

With best wishes

Tricia Kelleher
Principal

We are always pleased to speak with parents enquiring on behalf of their daughters, to explain more about the life at the Junior School, to arrange to send you a prospectus or to organise a personal visit.

The atmosphere within the Junior School and the interaction of pupils, both with each other and with their teachers, are best understood by experiencing them first-hand during a visit. For this reason we encourage all parents to visit the School, either by individual appointment or as part of one of our Open Mornings.

To arrange a visit to Perse Girls please contact the Junior School office on 01223 346140.

SIXTH FORM

We are a new, co-educational sixth form college with exceptional academic foundations. With our plans to offer International Baccalaureate alongside A Levels, we’ll be opening the doors to our first intake of students in September 2008.

So why should you be as excited as we are about the prospects of a new sixth form college arriving in Cambridge?

We want to foster your love of learning, to help you be inquiring, reflective and open-minded, prepared for the opportunities of today’s increasingly international world.

We offer a diverse range of 29 subjects at AS and A Level and we are a candidate school for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme. Subject to authorisation we hope to introduce the IB Diploma alongside A Levels in 2008, making us the first independent school in Cambridge to introduce IB.

We all know that great results are important in this increasingly competitive world of ours, but we also like to see beyond that..

We want to you all to grow as individuals, to rise to your talents, develop as real people and see the world from a wider perspective.

ADMISSIONS

All aspects of admission are handled by the Admission team, from an initial enquiry up until the day when a pupil arrives at Perse Girls. Our Admissions Secretary, Nicky Longmuir, is always pleased to speak with parents enquiring on behalf of their daughters, to explain more about the life at the school, to arrange to send you a prospectus or to organise a personal visit.

The atmosphere within the school and the interaction of pupils, both with each other and with their teachers, are best understood by experiencing them first-hand during a visit. For this reason we encourage all parents to visit the School, either by individual appointment or as part of one of our Open Days.

To arrange a visit to Perse Girls please contact Nicky Longmuir on +44 1223 454722. To find out more please click on one of the links below.

Admissions Policy

The Perse School for Girls is an independent, selective day school with over 700 pupils between the ages of 7 and 18. Major points of entry are at the ages of 7, 10, 11, 13 and in the Sixth Form. Places occasionally become available in other year groups and we are pleased to consider applications at any stage. We are looking above all for potential and for pupils who will thrive and be happy in the stimulating environment offered by the School.

An offer of a place is based on the results of the tests and/or interviews as detailed below and a reference from the student's current school.

Entry Procedures

Junior School

  • Entry at 7+
Candidates have to sit English, Mathematics and Non-Verbal Reasoning tests as well as having an interview with the Head of the Junior School.

  • Entry at 10+
At this stage the classes increase in number from two to three and entry is by English, Mathematics and Non-Verbal Reasoning tests. Candidates are interviewed by the Head of the Junior School and the Headmistress of the Perse School for Girls.

Senior School

  • Entry at 11+
External candidates sit entrance tests comprising English, Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning papers. Each candidate is interviewed by the members of staff who marked the English and Mathematics papers as well as by the Headmistress or by a Deputy Head.

Junior School pupils normally transfer automatically to the Senior School unless there are concerns about progress. In such cases, discussions will have taken place with parents, enabling them to make alternative arrangements.

  • Entry at 12+
Candidates sit tests in English, Mathematics and a Modern Language and are interviewed by the respective Heads of Department as well as by the Headmistress.

  • Entry at 13+
Candidates sit tests in English, Mathematics, French and a Second Modern Language. They are interviewed by the respective Heads of Department as well as by the Heads of Science and Classics. They are also interviewed by the Headmistress or by a Deputy Head.

  • Entry at 14+
Candidates sit tests in English, Mathematics, French and a Second Modern Language. They are interviewed by the respective Heads of Department as well as by the Heads of Biology, Chemistry and Physics and the Heads of Department in any chosen option areas. They are also interviewed by the Headmistress.

  • Entry to the Sixth Form
Entrants are normally expected to have a minimum of eight good GCSEs with at least grade A in those subjects to be studied at AS level. We expect students whose language of instruction has not been English to reach a satisfactory standard in the School's English Entrance Test.

A number of scholarships and exhibitions are offered by the Governors for entry to the Sixth Form. These are awarded on academic merit and are open to both internal and external candidates. The Old Persean Benevolent Trust offers an award open to internal candidates only.

Bursaries

We are keen that the Perse Girls’ educational experience is available to bright, enquiring and capable girls. The School uses its Bursary funds to ensure access for girls who demonstrate particular potential and whose families would be otherwise unable to afford the full fees. Bursaries have been available in the Senior School for many years and from September 2008, a new Perse Girls Junior School bursary fund will be available for pupils joining the school in Year 3. .

Bursaries are dependent on the level of parental income.

Registration

If you would like to register your daughter/ward for entry to The Perse School for Girls please complete and return the Registration Form together with a non-refundable registration fee of £75.

Once we have received the form and fee, you will be held on our registrations list for the proposed year of entry and you will be informed about the entrance test at the appropriate time.

If you would like to print a Registration Form, a Junior School Registration Form can be downloaded here, a Senior School Registration Form here and a Sixth Form Registration Form here.

Completing and returning the registration form along with the registration fee will ensure that we automatically send an invitation for the Entrance Tests.
