We aim to encourage children to achieve their full potential in every aspect of their school life. This is dependent upon the school forming sound, fruitful and mutual partnerships that involve staff, children, governors, parents and the local community. The partnership between home and school is built on trust and openness and it is only on this basis that communication will be of benefit to the children in our school. The monthly school newsletter, “Dragonflyer”, goes a considerable way towards creating the openness required.
Communication between teachers and parents is encouraged, on a formal basis, at consultation evenings, through the pupil’s annual report regarding their educational progress, and on a more informal basis, at social events, open evenings and contact between us when problems or concerns arise at home or in school. The school has a very enthusiastic Parent Teacher Association Committee, which works hard to raise money for the school by organising a wide range of social and fun events for the pupils and their families.
Number of pupils on roll for school year 2006-2007: Early Years 138 (Reception 60; Nursery 78 part-time places) Key Stage 1 120 (Years 1 and 2) Key Stage 2 240 (Years 3 to 6) Total 498
The school is multi-cultural and multi-ethnic and more than 200 of the pupils have English as an additional language (EAL). Indeed, there are twenty-seven different languages spoken by our pupils. The classteachers are ably supported by a Special Education Needs co-ordinator (SENCO), two Special Education Needs Teaching Assistants, two EAL support teachers and four bilingual support assistants (Arabic, Bengali and Urdu/Punjabi). There are twelve Teaching Assistants who work closely with the teachers in the classroom and three members of the administration team. Including the Headteacher, there are 43 members of teaching and support staff working to provide high quality learning experiences for our children
Teachers lead an extensive programme of extra-curricular activities based on sports and the creative arts. The school has football, rugby, netball, cricket, and athletics teams, all participating in inter-school matches. All teams are open to boys and girls. Pupils have an opportunity to learn to play woodwind, brass, guitar, violin or ‘cello with professional musicians who visit the school on a weekly basis. The school has an excellent orchestra, choir and recorder ensemble.
We welcome to school visiting theatre groups, writers, poets, history workshop leaders, artists and musicians, scientists and technology workshops, and all pupils make visits to many interesting places within the south Wales area, to support their class topics and to bring the curriculum to life in an enjoyable and stimulating manner. We believe we promote the Cwricwlwm Cymreig in its broadest sense.
