PRIMARY SCHOOL

Welcome !!!

It was with great pleasure that I took up my appointment as the new Head Teacher of Lakeside Primary School this week. I was fortunate to work very closely with Mr Granger last term to ensure a smooth transition for the school community. I have arrived at the school with five years previous Headship experience at Meadowlane Primary School in St Mellons and twenty two years teaching experience in total.

This is a good time to remind parents that the late arrival at school is disruptive and sets a poor example to the children. All children should be in school before the bell is rung in the junior department at 8.55am or the doors are opened in the infant department at 8.45am. Teachers are supervising the junior playground from 8.45pm and it is important that parents know that children are unsupervised before this time.

Pupils should also be collected promptly from school at the end of the day - failure to do so can cause unnecessary distress to pupils. From next week a register of late arrivals and collections will be kept for referral to the Education Welfare Officer for persistent offenders.

INITIAL MESSAGE

You will have received this week notification of forthcoming events at the school that hopefully will be of interest to you.

The Annual Governors Report to Parents, being held on Thursday October 4th at 7pm, provides an opportunity for parents to meet members of the Governing Body and for them to ask questions about the school. The report that you will have received provides information relating, predominantly, to the school year 2006/7. Please take time to read this report and if you have any questions relating to its content or any general questions for the school governors, please attend on October 4th and you will have the opportunity to ask.

Following this meeting, the PTA will be holding their AGM. This meeting provides parents with an ideal opportunity to find out more about the Parent Teacher Association, a body that work hard each year raising valuable funds to help support school activities. The PTA is always looking for new members and would be delighted if any interested parents would attend this meeting and find out how they can have some fun as well as supporting the school.

On Tuesday October 2nd at 7pm, there is a curriculum evening for parents of pupils in Reception classes this year. Members of staff will be providing information on the school curriculum and how parents can assist their child at home. It is hoped that all parents of pupils who have entered our Reception classes this year will be able to attend this most informative evening.

The above events will also provide me with the opportunity to meet parents. I have had the chance to speak to a number of parents

since my appointment, and look forward to meeting many more of you in the coming weeks to ascertain your views on the school and to answer any questions that you might have.

CORE INFO

We aim to encourage children to achieve their full potential in every aspect of their school life. This is dependent upon the school forming sound, fruitful and mutual partnerships that involve staff, children, governors, parents and the local community. The partnership between home and school is built on trust and openness and it is only on this basis that communication will be of benefit to the children in our school. The monthly school newsletter, “Dragonflyer”, goes a considerable way towards creating the openness required.

Communication between teachers and parents is encouraged, on a formal basis, at consultation evenings, through the pupil’s annual report regarding their educational progress, and on a more informal basis, at social events, open evenings and contact between us when problems or concerns arise at home or in school. The school has a very enthusiastic Parent Teacher Association Committee, which works hard to raise money for the school by organising a wide range of social and fun events for the pupils and their families.

Number of pupils on roll for school year 2006-2007:
Early Years 138 (Reception 60; Nursery 78 part-time places)
Key Stage 1 120 (Years 1 and 2)
Key Stage 2 240 (Years 3 to 6)
Total 498

The school is multi-cultural and multi-ethnic and more than 200 of the pupils have English as an additional language (EAL). Indeed, there are twenty-seven different languages spoken by our pupils. The classteachers are ably supported by a Special Education Needs co-ordinator (SENCO), two Special Education Needs Teaching Assistants, two EAL support teachers and four bilingual support assistants (Arabic, Bengali and Urdu/Punjabi). There are twelve Teaching Assistants who work closely with the teachers in the classroom and three members of the administration team. Including the Headteacher, there are 43 members of teaching and support staff working to provide high quality learning experiences for our children

Teachers lead an extensive programme of extra-curricular activities based on sports and the creative arts. The school has football, rugby, netball, cricket, and athletics teams, all participating in inter-school matches. All teams are open to boys and girls. Pupils have an opportunity to learn to play woodwind, brass, guitar, violin or ‘cello with professional musicians who visit the school on a weekly basis. The school has an excellent orchestra, choir and recorder ensemble.

We welcome to school visiting theatre groups, writers, poets, history workshop leaders, artists and musicians, scientists and technology workshops, and all pupils make visits to many interesting places within the south Wales area, to support their class topics and to bring the curriculum to life in an enjoyable and stimulating manner. We believe we promote the Cwricwlwm Cymreig in its broadest sense.

I hope that you enjoy your visit to our web site and find the information you seek.

School Inspection

The school received a positive inspection report from Estyn in October 2002, and it stated that, “This is a good school with a number of notable features. Standards are above the national average in all three core subjects; the quality of provision is generally very good and management overall is very good.” www.estyn.gov.uk/inspection_reports

GENERAL

HEALTHY LIVING
The junior tuckshop will re-open next Monday 10th September during the morning break (Monday - Friday) The stall will open until the end of November. Portions of fruit and fruit drinks are available at 20p each.

We encourage healthy eating across the whole school and I have been asked by parents if we would actively discourage the increasing practice of children bringing sweets and chocolate to school to share with their classmates on the occasions of a birthday or on return from holiday. I would be grateful if parents would refrain from sending sweets and chocolate in these circumstances. Teachers have been told
not to distribute sweets and cakes to their classes.
