Welcome to St Fagan's C.W Primary School

St Fagans Primary School Cardiff

St Fagans Church in Wales Primary school in located on the western edge of the city of Cardiff in the parishes of St Fagans with Michaelston-Super-Ely. As the demand for an Anglican education in Michaelston, Earlswood and the Drope increased, the old school in the village proved inadequate, even though it had been the seat of learning for 140 years.

The new school opened in February 1993 with 105 children, and a nursery class began after Easter the same year. The school has increased in numbers over the last few years to a total of 210 and 30 part time nursery children. We are an enthusiastic and committed team of teachers and support staff.

It is a very happy school with a Strong Christian/Anglian family ethos - having close links with the community and the church at large.

Aims of the School
  • To provide the best possible education for your children.
  • To help your child(en)to read, write, listen and speak properly.
  • To help your child(ren) learn a great deal about Mathematics and Science.
  • To help your child(ren) develop a respect for Christian religious values: understanding and tolerance of other religions.
  • To help your child(ren) to understand the world in which they live.
  • To help your child(ren) to enjoy music, art and craft activities.
  • To give plenty of opportunities for your child(ren) to enjoy different aspects of physical education.

Headteacher's Welcome

Croeso
I have had the privilege of being the headteacher of St Fagans Church in Wales Primary School for 17 years.
Every year we seem to have new challenges and targets set for schools and it is so easy to forget the main reason for the school - to provide an effective learning environment where the children feel secure and valued. At St Fagans we see it as an extension of the Christian family where patience, tolerance and love have the highest of profiles.
I am proud of the positive ethos within the school, which is a major strength at St Fagans, a school where every child takes pride in their learning and in their responsibility of caring for others.
This special relationship also extends to the home where we can see the home/school partnership working at its best. Every child is unique, special, talented and has a need to succeed. Each pupil has an important role to play within the happy family at St Fagans Church in Wales Primary School.

CURRICULUM

Introduction to the School Curriculum

Our curriculum is broad, balanced, differentiated and relevant to meet the needs of each individual. It is expected to be challenging, interesting and exciting. As St Fagan's we value our activity lead curriculum where every class has at least two educational visits a year. Years 3 and 4 have a two day residential course in Amelia Trust, and Glyncornel Environmental Centre in Llwynypia.

Year 5 have a venture week in Llangrannog or St Donat's Castle, and Class 6 go to Duporth or Hayling Island for their venture week. These off site experiences promote learning and life skills.

Teaching the curriculum effectively is our most important role as well as the development of each child in an all round way. We endeavour to construct a programme of activities and events with a range of enriching experiences that will help them appreciate sport, the arts, and value our traditional customs.

We take the maximum advantage of: The Museum of Welsh Life; The National Museum; Llancaiach Fawr; Caerleon; Techniquest; Cardiff Castle and Bay, Cosmeston; local churches and Llandaff Cathedral; immediate locality of the school, especially retail outlets.

A number of theatrical companies visit the school as well as musical ensembles and workshops  with poets, authors and artists.

Charging

We are fortunate for the support of the Friends committee who subsidise most of the transport costs.

As we cannot finance these visits entirely from the school fund, we always ask for a voluntary contribution to cover the cost of other expenses, but if we fall well below the class total then the activity is cancelled.

Should any family be experiencing financial hardship, please contact the headteacher in order that we may make confidential arrangements to pay for the visit.
