The Junior School
The Junior School is an equal partner in The Grange School as a whole though separate in organisation and situated in its own grounds. It provides solid foundations in literacy and numeracy, encouraging creativity, enthusiasm for learning, respectfulness and commitment to activities beyond the curriculum. Nonetheless, in recent years, it has achieved some of the best Key Stage 2 SATs results in the country. A talented, caring and enthusiastic staff provides a wide variety of opportunities for learning and growth.
The Senior School
The Grange Senior School, despite being founded only in 1978, has established itself very quickly as a leading player in secondary education both regionally and nationally.
Places are increasingly in demand because of superb academic results (which have seen The Grange in the very highest reaches of national performance tables in recent years) and the school’s fast growing reputation as a really friendly, vibrant school offering a genuinely all-round education.
The Grange School admits most of its pupils at the ages of 4, 11 or 16. When there are vacancies at other ages we are delighted to receive applications for consideration.
In recent years the quality of the school’s results at all levels has been such that some prospective parents have assumed that their children need to be near-geniuses to get a place! That is not the case.
We hope to offer places to children who love learning and who are committed to making the most of their talents, but who will also achieve the pace and expectations which the school sets. In addition we are looking for pupils who wish to give a whole-hearted commitment to the school’s extra-curricular life.
Entry at all ages is based on performance in a series of assessments or tests, full details of which can be found in the section of this site entitled ‘How to Apply’. The school’s Admissions Policy can also be read or downloaded.

Participation in the very wide range of activities which we provide beyond the academic curriculum is not just an optional extra at The Grange: it is an essential part of its success. We believe that the high level of academic performance that we know here is achieved in no small part because our children and young people are happy at school and fully involved in its wider life. The wealth of extra-curricular activities on offer gives every pupil the opportunity to discover and exploit the talents and interests that give life balance and richness, promoting both happiness and motivation.
From Brownie Pack to Young Enterprise, Suzuki Violin lessons to award winning choirs, through an astonishing variety of clubs and societies as well as in external competitions, our pupils participate in enormous numbers with great energy and commitment, some to national success. That is also true on the sports field, where a large number of pupils represents the school in a good range of sports, regularly performing with distinction in national and regional competitions. In addition, a very high proportion of pupils across both sites learns musical instruments, takes dance lessons or prepares for Speech and Drama exams.
On top of all of these, every pupil can find a niche in the House System, through which a wide range of talents -musical, sporting, creative and intellectual - is tested in competitions at various age groups through all parts of both Junior and Senior schools. Pupils (including those who might not have the opportunity to represent the school, the county or the region as so many do) take enormous pride in their contribution; the presentation of the award for best House is an eagerly anticipated highlight of the year.
Two of the most important facets of life at The Grange are to be found in the breadth of activities on offer outside the taught curriculum, and the expectation that all pupils will participate in those activities. We believe most strongly that the confidence, self-esteem and relationships that our pupils take with them from these activities into their academic work is an important reason for the examination success of recent years.
Furthermore, in discovering new skills and interests, in learning the values associated with team work or through charitable fund raising (to use but two of many relevant examples), and in being as fully involved as possible in the life of the Grange community, our pupils are enriching their lives in both long and short-term. In doing so they are becoming the sort of well-rounded individuals that are attractive to universities as they choose from many academically well-qualified applicants.
