PRIMARY SCHOOL

RSDCD is a day and residential, co-educational, non-maintained special school and college. RSDCD offers specialist provision for students from 2-22 years who have severe and complex learning difficulties combined with significant communication difficulties which include little or no oral language. These learning difficulties may arise from a combination of sensory and multi-sensory impairment with severe and/or profound and multiple learning difficulties, autistic spectrum disorders and physical and medical conditions. We offer a range of residential provision to suit individual learners and their families up to and including 52 week care.

The college offers a wide range of courses at 16+ and Post 19. The emphasis is on a transition curriculum to support personal and social development and learning for life.

Griffin Lodge is a residential home for twelve young deaf adults who are autistic or have complex needs, situated in a quiet part of Heald Green, Stockport in its own grounds close to a variety of good local amenties.

Our pupil/student population

RSDCD is a mixed day and residential , co-educational, non- maintained special school and college which caters for pupils/students with severe and complex learning difficulties combined with significant communication difficulties including very limited or no oral language. Most students present with severe/profound hearing loss with additional complex needs but we also admit students who are hearing where they have complex social communication disorders and severe learning difficulties. The range of needs accommodated include profound and multiple learning difficulties, severe learning difficulties, visual impairment, multi-sensory impairment, physical disabilities, autism and includes students with challenging behaviours associated with their disability.

AStudents are generally in the age range 7-19 but we sometimes admit younger students on individual programmes where this is considered appropriate and we have a growing number of students aged 19-21 accessing a Vocational Pathways course. Pupils/students attending RSDCD come from across the whole of the British Isles because of the very specialist provision made here.

In order to meet the diverse needs of our pupils/students we have adopted a total communication approach incorporating sign, speech, symbols (including PECS), objects of reference, photographs and real objects to support the learning of individual students.

School

The school is currently divided into three departments which have different curriculum and communication emphases:

  • Deaf/SLD – where pupil/student needs arise from a combination of their deafness and severe or complex learning difficulties which may include an autistic spectrum disorder
  • Autism Support – where the primary need is a student’s autistic spectrum disorder.  Some of these students may also be deaf
  • Multi-Sensory Support – for pupils/students who have a profound and multiple learning difficulty including hearing and/or visual problems.  These tend to be our most vulnerable students

Pupils/students throughout the school may have physical and medical needs and some students in all departments may demonstrate challenging behaviour from time to time.  Safety of students and staff is our paramount concern and we take all necessary steps to ensure they are protected.

The school is the subject of routine OfSted inspections. At our last inspection in March 2003,  RSDCD was judged to be a ‘very good school’,  providing ‘good value for money’.
