Welcome to St Ambrose Preparatory School

St. Ambrose Preparatory School is a Roman Catholic independent day school for boys aged between 3 and 11 years, administered by the Congregation of Christian Brothers.

In recognising Jesus Christ as 'The Way, The Truth and The Life', we strive to make real the ideals of Blessed Edmund Rice, the founder of the Order of the Christian Brothers. These ideals are succinctly expressed in the Blessed Edmund Rice Prayer, which is said each day in school.

In order for your son to grow and fulfil his true potential, to become a man of courage and compassion, able to live a life of love and service, he requires nourishment of body, mind and spirit. The aim of our school is to provide for your son's needs at all levels.

There are three departments in the school, a Nursery for boys and girls aged 3+, an Infant Department for boys of 4+ to 7 and a Preparatory Department for boys of 7+ to 11.

Each form has its own teacher and there are specialists for sport and music. The school day begins at 9.00am and finishes at 3.00pm for the Nursery and Infants and 3.15pm for Juniors.

We warmly welcome children of all other religious traditions

The Religious Education offered by the school goes well beyond the bounds of religious lessons, important as they are. The work we undertake, in all its facets, is informed and underpinned by sound Christian principles and enlivened and energized by the knowledge that Jesus Christ is the centre of all we do.

School Masses are celebrated each half-term in Holy Angels Church and the Parish Priest is our School Chaplain.

Although emphasis is given to the thorough grounding needed in Reading, English and Mathematics, we strive for excellence in all areas. The children enjoy a broad, balanced curriculum including the National Curriculum subjects:

  • Science
  • History
  • Geography
  • Music
  • Art
  • P.E.
  • D.T.
  • P.H.S.E.
  • Information and Communication Technology

Teaching methods incorporate a careful blend of formal and less formal approaches.

Topic work and projects present the children with opportunities for cross-curricular activities and our impressive computing facilities offer support and enrichment to the whole curriculum.

St. Ambrose Preparatory School is justly proud of its fine sporting tradition. The school has excelled in many areas. In addition to the timetabled activities in which all participate, boys are encouraged to enjoy some of the many extracurricular pursuits available, including:

  • Soccer
  • Rugby
  • Swimming
  • Cricket
  • Cross-country running
  • Athletics
  • Tennis
  • Table Tennis

Multisport events are generally offered to all age groups during school holidays. Teams compete successfully in many local and regional events, some of which we host ourselves.

Sport provides a good balance to the work done in the classroom and natural training in courage, endurance and sportsmanship.
