PRIMARY SCHOOL

Welcome to our school

Priory Woods is an all age community special school situated in east Middlesbrough. Our school provides a quality, inclusive education for pupils with severe learning difficulties and those with profound and multiple needs. As from September 2007 we will become Priory Woods School & Art College and would like to share our work with you. We hope that you enjoy your visit and that you keep popping back to see what we are doing. Although we are very busy in school we will try to add new material to our pages every half term. If you don’t find what you are looking for please contact us and we’ll do our best to help you.

Working HardPriory Woods caters for pupils from the ages of four to nineteen with a range of educational needs including pupils with severe learning difficulties and pupils with profound and multiple needs.

Working alongside a range of professionals, we endeavour to meet the individual needs of all our pupils. We offer a broad and balanced curriculum with high expectations for both pupils and staff. Strong links with the local community, mainstream schools and colleges of further education further enrich the educational opportunities available to our pupils.

Curriculum

Welcome to the Art room.

Art - Creativity and expression for everyoneArt is a powerful and very individual communication tool for our pupils. Through artistic media Priory Woods pupils can express their understanding of the world around them and their own internal world. Art combines the development of ideas and concepts with the exploration and education of feeling, thus helping to educate the 'whole' child, emotionally, aesthetically, spiritually, intellectually and socially. Individual responses and diversity are celebrated as there is no 'right' or 'wrong' way to create a piece of work.

Priory Woods pupils, in particular can gain confidence and a feeling of self worth. A child's work be it a drawing or a junk model stands as a unique form of communication. For some pupils, sensory exploration and development will be the most important criteria.

Art supports and enhances many areas of the curriculum. It is essential that the development of the individual's artistic pursuits be seen in the long term. Priory Woods pupils should leave school whenever possible with the desire to be artistically creative in their own lives. To this end the Art Programmes of Study will be an important part of the education and development of our pupils.

Welcome to Literacy - Teaching and Learning

Learning English encompasses all aspects of communication -non-verbal, verbal and written. Work in English promotes learning across the curriculum and underpins pupils' achievements and participation in all aspects of their lives.
In particular, English offers pupils with learning difficulties opportunities to:

  • develop the ability to respond, to listen and to understand
  • to interact and communicate effectively with others in a range of social situations
  • make choices, obtain information, question and be actively involved in decision making
  • develop creativity and imagination
  • have access to a wide range of literature to enrich and broaden their experience
