Headteacher's Welcome

I would like to welcome you and your child to our school. The choice of school for your child is very important and I hope that the time spent with us will be both a time of educational benefit and a time of happiness.

For any school to be successful in helping children to fulfil their potential, it is necessary for home and school, parents and teachers, to work together in partnership. In this way we can create the best possible learning environment for our children.

Expectation should be high for both sides of this partnership. Teachers will expect high standards of effort and behaviour from all children and parents will expect quality of teaching and care for their children throughout the school year.

This website will explain and inform you of many areas of your child's education in our school. If there is anything you wish to discuss, please contact us.

This is your school. I hope that you can become involved in the life of the school and that you will feel welcome when you do visit us.

Mrs S. Porteus

How our school is organised.

The school is organised in four teams, two in each of our buildings:

Foundation Stage: Nursery & Reception classes
Key Stage 1: Year 1, Year 2 and the IASC.

Lower Key Stage 2: Year 3 and Year 4.
Upper Key Stage 2: Year 5 and Year 6.

We operate with mixed age group classes throughout most of the school. This gives us 11 mainstream classes in all. Our overall pupil teacher ratio is currently 26:1 Small groups may be detached from classes for extra support and other curriculum work. We receive some Local Authority support from the RAPT (raising attainment and performance team).

We also have teaching assistants who work under the guidance of the teaching staff to support pupils’ learning across the school. Other adults also help out in school in a variety of ways. Parents and friends of the school come into this category. If you feel that you would like to help in some way, please contact the class teacher in the first place, or ask at the main office.
The Foundation Stage
The Nursery has two sessions to allow the maximum number of children to attend. It has a permanent staff of one teacher and two nursery nurses plus, on occasions, students, parent helpers and work experience pupils. Prior to a child starting the nursery they are visited at home by a member of the nursery staff who gives an information booklet to the parent, who then has the opportunity to discuss their child’s needs and background and answer any questions about the nursery. Throughout their time in the nursery the children have access to a broad and balanced curriculum to promote their social, emotional, mental and physical development.

The Reception Class is part of the foundation stage unit, and the transition to the Reception Class is well planned to gradually introduce many aspects of mainstream school. Parents are invited to attend an informal meeting in the term before their child starts school full time. Included in this is a tour of the primary school and an opportunity to meet with school staff and any other agencies who may be involved in their child’s education and welfare. For example – the school nurse, the Educational Social Worker etc. Time is also set aside for parents to ask any questions.

The aim in the Nursery, and in Reception, is to educate through the learning process of play, the children gradually being introduced to the more formal aspects of learning. It is also hoped that the time spent in the foundation stage is a very happy and sociable experience, creating a positive attitude towards learning and school.

School Care Code

To assist in fostering good behaviour and manners in our school, we follow the school 'CARE' code. This code is displayed prominently around school and referred to often by staff and children.

CHOIR

In choir we have to come in quietly and sort ourselves out into our proper lines. Miss Rennie checks the register to see if everyone is here then she gets us started on singing some songs. In choir we make lots of beautiful music and we love to sing lots of songs. It lots of fun because Miss.Rennie pulls funny faces and makes us all laugh. Miss.Rennie is so kind and funny. Miss.Rennie is one of our favourite teachers.Bye for now. cya.

Guitar Club

We have recently started a new guitar club within school. This is run by Miss Rennie and Mr Laver on Wednesday nights from 3:15 until 4pm.
We purchased five new acoustic guitars and two electric guitars withamplifiers at the beginning of the school year and we have already begun having fun with them.
The aim of the club is to teach members to play chords which can be used to play songs and tracks by their favourite bands. We will also learn to read tabliture, the special notation used by guitarists. This will enable us to learn the lead guitar riffs from the same songs.
Hopefully by next term, the guitar group will combine with the drum group with a view to producing a concert gig.
