AIMS AND VALUES

The schools aims are set out below. We always do our best to improve on what we have already achieved and in doing so endeavour to ensure that the rhetoric of these aims is turned into reality.
We aim to....

1) Curriculum.
a) Provide a good quality curriculum rather than superficial quantity.
b) Manage time to deliver the National curriculum as much as possible whilst still giving time to the hidden curriculum.
c) Work should be challenging and differentiated.
d) Provide some specialist teaching.
e) Provide time for individual needs.

2) Personal and Social Development.
a) Respond to the childrens needs.
b) Have realistic expectations of each child.
c) Instil respect for others work.
d) Foster positive relationships between adult/child/child.
e) Develop whole school policy covering behaviour, attitude to work, work environment etc.
f) Prepare the child for the next phase of education.
g) Give importance to self discipline and self organisation.

3) Organisation
a) Carefully plan use of teacher time for teaching, instructing, questioning, explaining, and assessing.
b) Use individual, whole class or group teaching as appropriate.
c) Establish routines and systems in order to give the children security and confidence.
d) Group appropriately for task.
e) Groupings must maintain the childs self esteem.
f) Avoid excessive unmanageable groups. Four children or fewer is a reasonable norm. For some tasks it may be more.
g) Set realistic deadlines for the completion of work.
Create an environment where children are given the opportunity to initiate their own tasks, ideas and work.

4) Resources and Environment
a) Aim to make best use of resources and care for them.
b) Plan the use of resources.
c) Aim to make full use of resources to ensure that all of the children receive their curriculum entitlement, to make best use of resources an integrated day can be a useful strategy.
d) The pupil teacher ratio should be kept as low as possible and staff should be distributed evenly throughout the school.
e) We should aim to give continuity and stability to children. This has an implication when considering their organisation and groupings
f) Whole school development in terms of resourcing, staff development, curriculum, premises and community should always be the aim. Priorities need to be established and achievable targets set.
g) We aim to improve the aesthetic quality of learning environments
h) We aim to improve behaviour, politeness, and maintain a generally improving caring set of attitudes.

Healthy School Happy School

Whinstone School really is a healthy place to be. We are part of Stockton’s “Healthy Schools” programme and are well on our way to becoming disgustingly fit.

Most of us remember to bring our water bottles to school every day and those who forget can always use one of the water fountains.

Some of us, including certain teachers, cycle to school and those who don’t are encouraged to WALK.

We have a fruity KS2 tuck shop which is run by the infamous Year 5 guys and gals. They are a wicked lot and refuse credit to those staff and pupils with poor credit ratings. Fruit costs 20p per item. Many people pay weekly and avoid the hassle of having to remember to bring cash every day. KS1 get their yummy fruit free every day of course, the lucky lot.

Our extended dining hall has a new salad bar, prepared by creative cooks. Remember 5 a day keeps the doctor away!

Freddy Fit sessions keep us, including Mrs Hogg who does them all, super fit.

We now have two massive yards to run about on during play times. This means we can all play out at the same time, even during the winter when the field is soggy.

Being healthy doesn’t of course just mean eating healthy foods and getting plenty of exercise. To be truly healthy we also need to be happy!

We do our best to care for each other. We do not tolerate bullies and we are learning to stand up to people who try to bully us or our friends. Remember, a bully can only succeed if you allow him or her to pick on you. If you know someone is being bullied don’t just stand there DO SOMETHING!

Year Six do a great job looking after the younger children and helping them over lunch times, which can be very stressful when you first start school.

Playground Buddies from all year groups do a great job helping at playtimes. There is no need for anyone to feel sad or lonely; a Buddy is always there to listen or to just walk around with.
