Catchgate Community Primary School is a caring place where everyone is equally valued.

  • Everyone is encouraged to work hard in a spirit of cooperation and consideration.
  • We respect each other and our surroundings.
  • We are extremely proud of all that goes on here. Our website shows that the children at Catchgate School are supported in their learning by dedicated staff, governors and parents.

The original Catchgate Primary School was closed on 19th October 2001. A new Primary School to serve the  village of Catchgate in County Durham, England, has been built and the old school has been demolished. The new building  holds 312 primary children, ages ranging from nursery to y6.

On Tuesday June 18th 2002, Brian Wilson, Minister of State for Energy and Construction officially opened our new £2.1 million building. Many visitors attended the opening ceremony including representatives from Durham County Council, Durham L.E.A., Northumbrian Water, AEI cables, Thorn Lighting, Millers Construction and NPower.

We have our own wind turbine to help generate electricity for our school. The Gazelle turbine is a three bladed 20kW wind turbine which enables our school to generate our own clean electricity. The turbine is on a tower 14.5 metres high and has blades 5.3 metres long.

The Gazelle is connected into the school's own three phase electricity system. When the wind is blowing, the power is used on site. Any excess is exported to the local distribution system. When there is not enough wind to supply the power needs, then electricity is imported from the normal electricity supplier. No switching or storage is needed and the system runs automatically 24 hours a day.

The Gazelle produces standard 400/415 volt 3-phase power, and is connected to the mains supply.

On a typical site with an annual mean wind speed of 6.5 metres per second at hub height, the Gazelle is designed to produce over 50,000kWh per year.

In an emergency, two independent brakes can each bring the turbine to a stop.

We also have an Ecovat water collection unit that collects water from porous surfaces and stores it for reuse, the recycled water is then used to flush toilets. We can monitor the amount stored and use interpretative information for the children to be aware of the need to conserve water. The building features a PVC-free wiring system and maximises natural daylight to reduce the need for artificial lighting.
