PRIMARY SCHOOL

School Aims

Ø      Provide a well-ordered, secure and caring environment in which each individual is valued and where learning can flourish;

Ø      Help children develop spiritually and morally, finding inspiration in Christian values while developing tolerance of other religions, races and ways of life;

Ø      Enable children to develop lively, enquiring minds and the ability to question and discuss rationally and to apply themselves to realistic tasks and challenges;

Ø      Enable children to understand and appreciate the world in which they live and the interdependence of individuals, groups and nations;

Ø      Encourage individuals to celebrate their own and others’ achievements and to develop a wide appreciation of human achievement and aspiration;

Ø      Enable both children and staff to fulfil their potential and in so doing acquire knowledge, skills, concepts and attitudes relevant to their present lives;

Ø      Present the Christian faith as a real and living faith.

We will achieve our aims by:

Ø      Establishing and obeying rules as part of our Assertive Discipline programme, allowing the opportunity for teaching and learning without distraction;

Ø      Providing stimulating and varied learning experiences which enable all children to succeed, including those with Special Educational Needs;

Ø       Encouraging, recognising and rewarding achievements in all aspects of school life.

Admissions Policy

 At Blue Coat School we are pleased to accept children between the ages of seven and eleven years whose parents apply for admission.  Most children are admitted to the school on direct transfer from Newton Hall Infants’ School.  However, if the demand for places is likely to exceed the number of places available, then the following considerations will be taken into account in the allocation of places:

1.      Children with a Statement of Special Educational Needs where Blue Coat is named as the only school which can meet their needs within Durham.

2.      Children Looked After by the local authority, resident in Newton Hall.

3.      Children of practising Christians whose parents are regular worshippers in the parish of Newton Hall.

4.      Children with sibling links to Blue Coat School at the time of admission.

5.      Children who live in the local community of Newton Hall in order of proximity on foot via an acceptable safe route to the front door of the school.

6.      Children of practising Anglicans who reside in the Deanery of Durham in order of proximity by road to the front door of the school.

7.      Children of practising Christians of other denominations who reside in the Deanery of Durham in order of proximity by road to the front door of the school.

8.      Children whose parents are practising members of other faiths who reside in the Deanery of Durham in order of proximity by road to the front door of the school.

Governors will give priority to first preferences.

Where a parent has been notified that a place is not available for a child, every effort will be made to help the parent to find a place in a suitable alternative school.  Parents who are refused a place have a statutory right of appeal.  Further details of the appeal process are available by writing to the Chair of Governors at the school address.

Children with Special Educational Needs

At Blue Coat School we recognise that every child is unique, having different strengths, interests and needs.  We foster a positive attitude with regard to special educational needs and build self-esteem and confidence.  We set high expectations and provide a supportive, encouraging environment in which children experience success and are motivated to achieve further success.

Special educational needs might include:

Ø      Children who have learning difficulties;

Ø      Children who have behavioural problems which affect learning;

Ø      Exceptional ability in one or more subjects.

If we feel a child has special educational needs, requiring modified curriculum or additional help, staff will make every effort to ensure that he/she receives the appropriate teaching necessary.  In identifying children with special educational needs we will take into account and consider:

Ø      The child’s attainment within the National Curriculum;

Ø      The child’s response to both the academic and social aspects of school life;

Ø      The child’s attitude to and relationship with other children and adults;

Ø      Any relevant, factual history.

Where there is a learning difficulty we will try to ascertain the nature and extent of the difficulty as soon as possible in order to provide the most appropriate support.  Parents are consulted immediately a child is suspected of having special educational needs.  Any resulting action will involve parents, class teacher and possibly the special needs support teacher as well as external support from health, social or psychological services.  We have a policy on Special Educational Needs provision, which is available in school.  The Head Teacher is also willing to discuss any relevant issues with parents and to answer specific enquiries.
