Poet

Our school was opened as a secondary school in 1935. It was refurbished as a primary school in 1979. We are a small school in a very pleasant semi-rural setting.

We have excellent facilities and equipment is constantly being up-dated. There are many opportunities for the children at our school to develop knowledge and skills.

Shield Row offers a very caring atmosphere of individual attention and social development. We believe in developing self-discipline in the children and provide a disciplined framework for them to grow.

Here at Shield Row we try to make our school a safe, warm and accepting place, where individuals will always count despite differences; to help every child, as far as is possible, to enjoy school work, to become confident and independent, and to find satisfaction and a sense of achievement.

We believe our children should be treated with courtesy, respect and cheerfulness.

We aim to make our school an ordered society that helps teaching and learning, in which expectation levels are both realistic and demanding, whether in academic performance or in social behaviour.

At Shield Row we seek to provide a broad and balanced curriculum, which aims to:

  • Provide equal opportunities for all according to their needs and abilities.
  • Encourage our children to think for themselves, to discriminate wisely and to express and argue their ideas rationally.
  • Stimulate and encourage the development and use of imagination, creativity aesthetic awareness.
  • To encourage a sense of right and wrong and to develop self-discipline.
  • To help children use language, maths and science skills effectively and with as much enjoyment as possible.
  • To provide children with a rich variety of learning experiences ensuring that practical tasks and first hand experiences are used wherever possible.
  • Offer methods of assessing and recording children's progress.

    Good, better, best

    Let us never rest

    Till our good is better

    And our better, best.

  • The curriculum has been designed to meet the aims of the school, the LEA, and the requirements of the 1988 Education Reform Act, including the National Curriculum.

The curriculum areas are Numeracy, Literacy, Science, Technology, History, Geography, Art, Music, RE and PE which includes swimming.

All pupils take lessons unless special arrangements have been made.
