PRIMARY SCHOOL

Mission Statement

The school aims to promote Catholic values based on the teachings of Christ and to bring all members of the school community – Staff, Pupils, Parents and Governors closer to God through the daily practice of those values in all areas of school activity.

About Our School

St Michael’s RC Primary School is a small village school built in 1795. St Michael’s is a happy school steeped in history and is situated five miles outside of Durham city centre, in the quiet village of Esh. There are presently 153 pupils in the school. The children travel to Esh from the surrounding towns and farms. Pupils are aged from 4 – 11 and are taught in six classes. St Michael’s is proud of its Catholic heritage and links with the local community and Parish.

Extra Curricular

Welcome to our extra curricular page. Here you will find information about extra curricular activites that are currently run in the school

Summary of the Governing Body’s Statement

Our fundamental aim is the “all round” development of each child so that he/she will fulfil his/her potential and use their skills to good advantage. The curriculum is, of course most than a collection of subject. It is the total offering of a school to its pupils. A particular aspect of R.C. voluntary aided schools is their commitment to the spiritual care and development of their pupils. In the development of a school as a faith community there is a particular concern to develop the whole person within the framework of the Church’s teaching. School plays an important part in the life of every child and therefore it is essential that from the beginning of his/her school life every effort is made to ensure that each child settles happily into a school routine. It is therefore important to develop close and harmonious links between home and school.

Complying with National Requirements, the School offers a broad and balanced range of subjects which include the Core subjects: Religious education, English, Mathematics, Science, I.C.T and Foundation subjects: History, Geography. Music, Art, Physical Education, Design Technology and Citizenship.

Each child’s individuality is recognised and word is planned matched accordingly. The School has an equal opportunities policy and great care is taken to promote racial equality.

Religious Education in the Curriculum

Religious Education in our school is in accordance with the provisions of the 1944 Education Act, which requires that there be a daily Act of Worship, attended by the pupils and appropriate periods of Religious Instruction within the weekly timetable. Our scheme of work throughout the school is based on the “This is our Faith” programme, which is closely linked into the new catechism of the Catholic Church. The children have a variety of activities with which they can make the Christian message their own and respond to it in prayer and worship. Religious Education in the school is essentially a partnership involving Children, Parents, Priest and Teachers of the school curriculum. All lessons are normally taken by all children unless another agreement has been reached.

Particular attention is devoted to developing caring attitudes among the children so as to ensure racial equality and harmony. We comply with LEA guidelines and record racist incidents, if they occur.
