ABLE STUDENTS
We recognise that exceptionally able children have special educational needs in that they require additional stimulus. We encourage such students to extend their range of experiences and to increase the depth of their understanding. We are particularly keen to promote the interests of those students who show an aptitude for Information and Communications Technology (ICT), Science, Design Technology and Mathematics as these are our chosen specialisms as a DfEE-designated Technology College. However in all areas extension activities for the more able are offered.
Provision is made for students who are musically talented to develop and improve their skills.
ADMISSION ARRANGEMENTS
Stanley School of Technology is an increasingly popular school with parents as you will see from the figures for parental preference below. We are close to being over-subscribed in years 7 and 8 and expect to be so again in 2004. As this trend continues, it may become more difficult for us to offer places to all those who apply. Our advice is to apply as early as possible to allow us to guarantee a place for your child. We were over-subscribed this year in Year 7, and exceeded our admission limit. We confidently expect this trend to continue.

ATTENDANCE
Good attendance is essential to a successful school career. The DfEE recommends that all students should aim for a minimum attendance of 93%; we too support this target. In school we use an electronic registration system which enables us to provide an accurate summary of a student's attendance on request. At times absence is unavoidable (eg. through illness) and at such times we would ask parents to inform the school of the reason for the absence and provide an explanatory note on the student's return to school.
Absence from school falls into two categories:
AUTHORISED: Which includes illness and up to 10 days holiday during the
academic year. If at all possible, holidays during term-time should be avoided.
If you are considering a holiday in term-time, please contact the appropriate
Head of Year, and request a Holiday Form. Be aware also of the need to avoid
internal and external examination periods.
UNAUTHORISED: Which includes truancy and other unofficial absence.
Absence can only be authorised by the school and this is why notes are so important. If there are problems with your child’s attendance the school and the Educational Welfare Officer would only be too happy to advise.
Summary: 1. We expect all students to achieve at least 93% attendance.
2. We expect all students to be punctual.
3. Please inform school if your child is absent.
4. Please supply an explanatory note to cover any absence.
5. The school and the EWO are happy to discuss any problems.
6. We operate a system of first day contact via telephone.
BEHAVIOUR
Students are expected to maintain high standards of behaviour and self-discipline at all times. The School has a Code of Conduct which students are expected to follow. The Code has three sections that outline appropriate behaviour in the school grounds, in the school building and in the classroom. Each student will be made aware of our expectations and should comply with them.
In addition, we do not expect students to misbehave on their way to or from school, and we will take action over any incident that is seen to bring school into disrepute. As a school we expect to work in partnership with parents to help solve behavioural problems.
Summary: 1. We expect high standards of behaviour from students at all times.
2. Students are expected to conform to the Code of Conduct.
3. We try to form a partnership with parents to solve problems. |
