About the School

Donisthorpe Primary School serves the communities of Donisthorpe and Moira. Children start the Foundation Stage here when they are four. We also have an intake from Moira Infants' School when they finish Year 2. When they are eleven, the children transfer to Ivanhoe College.

We are a successful school with two positive OFSTED reports. We are also proud to have been awarded the School Achievement Award for three consecutive years and the Basic Skills Quality Mark for the second time covering a period of six years.

The original part of the school was built in 1907 and is a typical example of buildings of that period although the school has undergone considerable development over the last few years due mainly to house building in the catchment area. The Edwardian exterior has been retained but when you visit you will see a much more modern interior.

We have recently built two new classrooms, administration area, medical room and foundation stage play area. Other recent additions are the newly refurbished ICT suite and library.

School Aims

1. To provide a caring environment which is conducive to learning and in which the individual pupil feels valued and secure.

2. To help the children to develop lively, enquiring minds and the attitude to apply themselves positively to both mental and physical tasks.

3. To help the children acquire knowledge, skills and attitudes relevant to the world in which they live now and into which they are growing.

4. To provide a broad and balanced curriculum and a wide range of opportunities for boys and girls to achieve their full potential and, where possible, to excel.

5. To encourage children to acquire and develop moral values, self- discipline and initiative.

6. To foster in the children concern and respect for people, property and the environment and to become responsible, courteous and reliable citizens.

The Curriculum

The school follows closely any guidance and recommendations provided by the Department for Education and Employment and the Local Education Authority. All children follow a broad curriculum at a level suited to their age and ability.

Class teachers are responsible for all basic curriculum teaching and for the general conduct and welfare of the children within their class.

The school curriculum which is under constant review by the staff is based on the National Curriculum.

Careful planning is carried out to make sure that our children experience a wide range of subjects with the right amount of time devoted to each learning area. In addition, we ensure the learning process is both continuous and progressive and that knowledge is built upon previous experience. Sometimes this will require setting the children in ability groups within a class or a year group.

The progress of your child will be checked by the teachers as part of their day-to-day work, and also by national tests which every child will take at the ages of 7 and 11. Your child will also take annual standardised tests in English and Mathematics.

Copies of all schemes of work, policies and OFSTED reports are available in school.
