Herbert Strutt Primary School

A letter from the Headteacher
"Welcome to Herbert Strutt Primary School. We are very proud of our school and always endeavour to promote the relationship between home and school, seeing this as crucial to your child's success. Our schools vision is 'We care, challenge, achieve and open minds'. These are not just words but actions. Every child is part of a wonderful school where he/she will develop their full potential." School Information

Herbert Strutt is a mixed Community School with 200 children on roll between the ages of 4 and 11. The school was opened in 1909 as a Grammar School and over the years has seen many adaptations as the age of the children has decreased. It is a large Grade 2 Listed Building in a Conservation Area. The playground has alongside it a grassed area, a school garden and a wildlife area and pond. The latter has won the prestigious Greenwatch Award for Schools and also won the Environment Agency Award for Derbyshire in May 2002.

How to find us

Herbert Strutt Primary School is located on the A6 in the South of Belper, opposite the Babington Hospital. Click here for a map (opens in a new window).

The Curriculum

We aim to teach a broad and balanced curriculum that recognises the multicultural society we live in. We follow the National Curriculum in all subject areas using nationally recognised schemes of work. Teachers plan carefully each week and we have a clear curriculum map, which avoids duplication and ensures continuity of learning.

Children are taught in three broad bands of ability in each class. Work is clearly matched to ability and each child has individual targets in English and Maths. Most lessons follow a three-part structure, introduction and whole class teaching, group work with a focused teaching group and a conclusion with feed forward to the next lesson.

Sex education is addressed through the Science curriculum, although formal sex education and talks on puberty are taught separately at Year 6 with support from our local School Nurse. Parents can see the materials used and can withdraw their children from this if they so wish.

All documents relating to National Curriculum schemes, Ofsted reports and whole school policies are available in school and the Headteacher will be happy to receive requests to look at these.

Well dressings

Herbert Strutt Primary School have been involved in the Well Dressings since they first began.
We are keen for the children to learn traditional crafts and to take part in community projects. Our ideas are based on 'Carnival' which is the theme of our 'Dare to be Different Week', which takes place in school the week beginning 26th June.
This year we have made our own well dressing boards to enable more children to have the opportunity to dress a well and get involved in this very exciting project.
