Mission Statement.

The Blandford School will be a centre of excellence and a learning resource for the local community. Pupils will have access to an education which enables them to fulfil their potential, progress into employment and participate fully in society.

The Aims of the School.

The school aims to:

•  develop and maintain an orderly, welcoming and caring school community which will encourage respect for the individual, promote tolerance and challenge prejudice.

•  enable all members of that community to develop their intellectual, physical, creative and aesthetic potential to the full.

•  encourage the development of moral and spiritual values.

•  increase the self esteem of all pupils by praising success and encouraging excellence.

•  educate and motivate all pupils to participate in the political, social, economic and cultural life of the wider community.

•  encourage an understanding of education as a lifelong process, and of the world of work by developing skills and attitudes which will assist all pupils to move on to education and employment beyond school.

Technology College Status

We are absolutely delighted that in September 2003, The Blandford School was launched as a Technology College. The specialist school movement encourages schools to bid for extra funding. A detailed strategic plan is required with challenging targets for future development and a commitment to impacting on the wider community, both on an ongoing basis and by equipping youngsters for the workplace both locally, nationally and internationally. In our two years since designation we have not only achieved an enormous amount in the subjects contained in the original bid (Design Technology, Mathematics, IT and Science) but also in other subjects across the school.

We now have eight IT suites, CADCAM facilities and a continuous programme of interactive whiteboard implementation. In Design Technology our laser equipment is the envy of many other educational establishments.

The opportunities this new technology provides is immense. Since September 2004 we have offered IT to all in Year 10. The first phase of our new Design Technology Block has also just been opened. The second phase commences in January 2006.

Extra curricular opportunities have also increased, these include the Summer 2004 DT Summer Show, an Engineering Day and Mathematics Master classes. In our Community we have been responsible for setting up the Durweston Website, IT facilities at TREADS and weekly IT course for U3A.

Our facilities are now available for the community to hire.

The future?

Technology College Status is all about the future – about preparing our youngsters for their adulthood. These are exciting times.

Accommodation

In addition to general teaching areas, facilities include specialist rooms for music, art, information technology, design and technology (including laser technology), science laboratories, a careers (Connexions) area, a gymnasium and a joint use leisure centre including a sports hall, fitness suite and swimming pool. The first phase of our extensive building project concluded in September 2005 with the opening of our DT Block. Milldown Middle School (now The Milldown Building) was refurbished in Summer 2005. The old Blandford School buildings are to be known as The Blandford Building.

Admissions

Prospective parents seeking admission information should telephone Mrs V Moore, Assistant Headteacher or Dorset LEA on 01305 251000.

Approximately 194 students attend The Blandford School Sixth Form. The admission number of Year 12 entry is 20 (over and above the number of students entering Year 12 from Year 11 within the school). Sixth Form admissions are at the discretion of the Headteacher, and will normally be decided in the light of the student’s commitment to study and his or her suitability for the course which is offered and applied for.

The school has a very good record of Sixth Form success for all levels of entry. There is a high percentage of University entrants, including Oxbridge candidates and specialist vocational students. In addition our student trainees gain modern apprenticeships and F.E. places.
