Prospectus - Admissions

Children are admitted to Bridport Primary School in accordance with Dorset County Council's Admission Arrangements. These state that your child can begin school in the September after his/her 4th birthday.

All children attending school for the first time do so on a part-time basis for one term unless it is considered to be inappropriate, either by school or parents, for the child to become full time. The admission number for the school is 60, which includes 2 reserve places. From September 1999, Bridport Primary has been a 2- form entry school. The classes will all continue to be mixed gender and ability.

In order to ensure that the school is organised efficiently, it is essential that we are aware of the termly intake in advance. For this reason, it is helpful if parents register their children with the school during (or before) the year prior to admission. Registration can be made either by calling in to the School Office, or by telephone.

Parents, who are new to the area and wish to visit the school, should make an appointment. We can then arrange to show you the school site, introduce you to our staff, and you can see the children during their school day.

Golden Rules

You will see our 'Golden Rules' in every classroom and around the school.

Over the last year we have made some quite significant changes to our behaviour system in consultation with staff and with children. We have a whole school behaviour policy, which pulls us together and helps us to work within the same guidelines. It helps each of us within the school to know how we should behave towards each other.

So what are the Golden Rules?

The rules that we agree to keep when involved in school activities. Golden Rules are displayed around the School, these were devised by the School Council and cover all aspects of school life. We all work to these rules whether we are on the premises, on the playground or out on a visit.

What is 'Golden Time'?

The children all receive 'Golden Time'. This is the reward for good behaviour, attitude and work during the week. Children have this 'gift' of time (20mins) to do an activity of their choice. The only way a child can lose their time is by breaking a 'Golden Rule'. Each broken rule leads to a couple of minutes lost and a time to discuss the problem. Every member of staff can discipline a child in this way by informing the class teacher of the problem. The general pattern has been that the children lose less time as the term progresses.

What else do we give as rewards?

We have stickers, certificates and positive marking.Your child may also be selected to go in the 'Golden Book', which is read out every Monday in assembly. Everyone loves going in the 'Golden Book'.

What other positive systems do we have?

We all take part in Quality Circle Time. This involves team games, socialising and celebrating achievements as well as discussing topical issues.

Different classes have different reward systems to keep it interesting! Unless your child has crossed the line as far as behaviour is concerned they will rarely need discipline beyond this system. If they do need further reinforcement they will be seen by the Key Stage Co-ordinators, Deputy or Head Teacher who will inform you of the difficulties and consult with you on the best way forward.

It is very rare for a child to be excluded from Bridport Primary School and obviously this would be in the most serious circumstances. Our behaviour policy is available for your reference. You are very welcome to talk to Mrs Clench who would welcome your comments.
