Ludwell Community Primary School is a village school on the outskirts of Shaftesbury. Set in a stunning location, with wonderful facilities and a low pupil to teacher ratio in every class, it really is a great school.

At Ludwell we are all committed to learning being a happy and stimulating experience, where each child is challenged to reach their full potential.

Aims:

·        provide a happy, secure and stimulating learning environment in which every pupil, irrespective of his or her background, is given the fullest opportunity to achieve his or her maximum potential.

·        provide caring and nurturing environment where children learn to value and respect.

·        enrich children’s lives through providing a stimulating learning experience.

·        develop the essential life skills to prepare our children for today and tomorrow’s society.

·        enable all children to become enthusiastic, confident and independent learners.

·        develop personal moral values and respect for others’ beliefs, opinions and ways of life within and beyond the local community.

Admissions

A school place is available for all children after their fourth birthday.

Before the children start school, they will be invited to meet their class teacher and one another. This helps them to get used to the school environment. Children and their parents are invited into school for a tea party prepared by the younger class. There are more day visits arranged for the children to come to school before starting full time.

An information evening for new parents will be held in the summer term to prepare for the exciting and emotional term ahead.

To help us plan effectively we need to know as soon as possible about prospective pupils for the years ahead. We encourage parents to make an appointment to visit the school with their children, preferably during school hours.

The Curriculum

During the school year your child will be working on a programme which will include all of the following elements:

English                        Mathematics              Science           Information & Control Technology

Art and Design            Geography                   History                        Religious Education

Physical Education     Design Technology     Music              Personal, Social & Health Education

The National Curriculum document defines the material that has to be covered in all subjects and copies of this, our policies and schemes of work can be seen in school if you wish.

There is a variety of teaching methods used – sometimes the children will be working individually, sometimes in groups and sometimes as a class. Care is taken to adjust the work to cater for the more able children and to be aware of children who may have special educational needs.

We ensure that the lessons are of interest to the children, on a two year cycle in Classes Two and Three and annually in Class One.  This makes lessons more meaningful and encourages breadth and quality in children’s work.  There will be a cross-curricular approach to most subjects but it will be necessary for some aspects of the curriculum to be dealt with separately.  There will also be on-going activities in Numeracy, (number bonds, multiplication tables and mental arithmetic), and Literacy, (speaking, listening, reading and writing, spelling and handwriting).
