Although a grammar school existed in the town for a while some three hundred years ago, the present Poole Grammar School dates from 1904 when it opened as Poole Secondary School in Mount Street. For a time the school was co-educational but separated in the late 1930's when Poole Grammar School catered only for boys and Parkstone Grammar for girls.

The school moved from its town centre Seldown site into new buildings on its present Gravel Hill site in 1966 on what was then a heathland area on the Poole/Wimborne road. In spite of significant housing development since then, the school enjoys a pleasant position, bordered on one side by a belt of trees and very close to protected woods and heath. Recently there have been various extensions to the facilities at the school to meet current needs. In addition to internal modifications, a Technology Block was completed in 1993 and an Arts Centre for Art, Drama and Music in 1997 along with two new Physics Laboratories and six classrooms. A new wing for Mathematics and Technology was added in 2002. Sports facilities have also been improved with a full size fitness room, climbing wall, gastro surface tennis courts and a large three-bay cricket practice nets facility part supported by a Lottery Grant. In 2007 the school was awarded a Wolfson Foundation grant for the improvement of science and ICT facilities and is building a new state of the art ICT/video conference suite.

The school has six networked PC computer suites, the most recent completed in 2003. All school PC's are connected to the Internet via a broadband connection. A number of PC's are also dispersed around the school notably in Music, Media Studies, Art, Geography, the Library, Careers and class sets of laptops in the Sciences. Years 8 and 9 complete a half GCSE in ICT and then go onto AS ICT or Microsoft Office courses in Years 10 and 11.

The school has been designated a Mathematics and Computing College since September 2003, which has led to significant improvements to the computer network in both capacity and coverage. A new computer suite and CISCO networking laboratory were completed in September 2003 and we look forward to developing these areas over the coming years. In 2007 the school was acknowledged as one of the 5 leading Maths and Computing science schools in the country and continues to build capacity in this area along with developing an outstanding curriculum for the 21st century.

Admissions Policy And Procedures For Entry In 2008

The admissions policy of Poole Grammar School aims to reflect the underlying ethos of the school which is to provide a selective education for boys from the Borough of Poole and its environs.

Parents and prospective pupils are warmly invited to visit the Open Evening on 25 September 2007, from 6-8pm. It is also possible for parents and their sons to tour the school by appointment during any school day in term time. Parents are welcome to contact the School Office if they have any queries.

Admissions at 12+

All the school admission authorities within the Poole LA operate an equal preference system. Parents are able to state their school preference without it being taken into account by the schools they are applying to. All admissions to maintained schools in Poole are co-ordinated by Pupil, Parent and Youth Services, the Local Authority.

In the case of 12+ Poole Middle/Combined School pupils, application forms should be submitted via the boy's current school. In all other cases, including Broadstone Middle School, parents should complete an application form and send or take it to the Admissions Team, Pupil Parent and Youth Services, Borough of Poole, The Dolphin Centre, Poole, BH15 1SA by the published closing date. Forms can be obtained from Poole Grammar School or the Admissions Team in Pupil, Parent and Youth Services. Applications can also be made on-line at the Borough's website: www.boroughofpoole.com. DfES regulations have set a national date for the issue of letters offering places which will be 3 March 2008.

Admission to Year 8

  • The closing date for applications to be received by the Borough of Poole is mid-day Friday 19 October 2007.
  • Admission to the school in Year 8 is conditional upon achieving the academic standard required in the school's entrance tests and on the availability of places.
  • To provide appropriate information on which an assessment of a candidate's academic standard can be completed, a series of tests will be held for which boys will come to Poole Grammar School on Saturday 17 November from 9.15am - 2.30pm.
  • The school's published admission number for Year 8 is 168 for September 2008.
  • Present Headteachers are asked to provide an assessment of their candidates' academic performance in relation to three bands. A (meets the required standard on the basis of test scores alone), B (Borderzone), and C (below Borderzone).
  • Boys will take tests in Verbal Reasoning, Mathematics and English.
  • On the basis of their test results, boys will be placed in three bands, Band A (meets the required standard on the basis of test scores alone), Band B (Borderzone, further information required), Band C (below Borderzone).
  • The scores for the entrance tests are adjusted (or "standardised") according to age.
  • Headteachers of feeder schools should pass on relevant information and data on boys whose scores put them in the borderzone and on any boys below the borderzone who they think should be considered.
  • The admissions panel will meet to consider all boys in the borderzone and others recommended by their Headteacher. The Head of Poole Grammar School will chair the panel.
  • Results will be posted to parents by Poole Local Education Authority on 3 March 2008.
  • Parents should respond to the offer of a place by the deadline date specified in the offer letter.
  • Test scores will be issued to parents of boys who are not offered a place. Parents of applicants who are not offered a place will be informed of their right of appeal.
  • Parents have the right of appeal when results are known and will be given information on taking up their statutory right of appeal at that time.
  • Academic assessments will not be repeated within 12 months of the last stage of the process e.g. the last panel or appeals meeting at which the candidate was assessed or reviewed. Any subsequent application will require written confirmation from the candidate's Headteacher that accelerated progress has been made.

Late Applications for Year 8

A late application is one that is received after the published closing date (mid-day 19 October). Late applications will not be dealt with until after all applications submitted by the closing date have been considered.

Parents who move into the area or whose sons have for other reasons missed the initial test dates, should make their application via Pupil, Parent and Youth Services as soon as possible. Please note that such tests and any subsequent offers of places will only take place subject to spaces still being available after the initial series. It is thus important that parents observe the October closing date noted above.

Years 9-11

Application for admission to these year groups can be made at any time. Assessment of pupils for entry into Year 9, 10 and 11 is carried out on request. If there is a vacancy in the year group and the pupil has reached the required standard in the school's entrance tests a place will be offered in accordance with this admissions policy. Alternatively if the year group is full, you may still request that the school tests your son. However, the school will be unable to offer a place as the school cannot offer places above its published admissions number, but you will have the right of appeal.

Applications for Admissions to Years 8, 9 10 and 11 for Students Outside Their National Curriculum Year Group

A pupil cannot usually be tested or accepted into a year group out of his normal year group unless:

  • he is already being taught in that year group in another school;
  • he has an unqualified letter of support from his existing headteacher;
  • he achieves the academic standard in the admissions tests; and
  • there is a place available in the year group

Overview - Lower Main School

As we personalise the curriculum for pupils so the distinction between Years 8 and 9 as a preparatory time for GCSE in Years 10 and 11 becomes more blurred. Many pupils are in fact accelerated through this period to take examinations earlier and so be challenged further. Hence this curriculum description is continually evolving. What we aim to do is to give a broad grounding during this period whilst encouraging in some subjects those pupils for whom it is appropriate to be accelerated.

Given the relatively narrow ability range of pupils, streaming or banding is not used except in Mathematics in Year 9. On admission to the school in Year 8 (12+), pupils are therefore placed in mixed ability forms in which they take the following subjects:

English Language and Literature, Mathematics, French, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, Religious Education, Art, Design Technology, Music, Physical Education, Personal and Social Education, Thinking Skills and Information Technology.

All students are entered for a short-course ICT GCSE at the end of Year 9 and we start GCSE science courses at the beginning of Year 9.

Statutory Government SATS tests in English, mathematics and science are taken at appropriate times for the ability of pupils during these two years.

In Year 9, in the same forms, pupils continue with these areas and add German or Spanish as a second foreign language.
