Port Regis exists to provide children between the ages of 3 and 13 with an all-round education of the very highest quality. The calibre of the teaching staff and the positive, encouraging approach in the classroom produces outstanding results as well as children who regard the learning process as engaging and exciting.

The range of extra-curricular opportunities is extraordinary, and the dedicated staff and exceptional facilities ensure that every child discovers and develops the talents and interests that lie within.

The approach in the classroom, as elsewhere, is very much one of praise and encouragement, and star totals, for good work and effort, are read out at Assembly every two or three weeks. Quarter- and Three-Quarter-term Assessments for effort and attainment are made known to parents, who also receive comprehensive reports at the end of each term.

The happy atmosphere of the school fosters in the children a friendly relationship with adults and with one another, whilst the common-sense approach to discipline produces young people who do not associate school and authority with that which is intimidating and oppressive. Each child is encouraged to develop his or her individuality and to learn that personal freedom involves responsibility to others.

Regular Morning Assemblies and Sunday Services as well as weekly Life Skills and PSE lessons reinforce a culture of care and consideration for other people.

Above all, the School is a wonderfully happy one with children who are lively and charming, relaxed and confident as well as courteous and well-behaved. They are looked after with great care and affection, and their well-being is the prime concern of every member of staff.

Well done to them all!

From the start of this year all our catering services are in-house and we are no longer using our previous contract caterers.  We had become increasingly frustrated by the corporate constraints we had to deal with, which included our inability to source produce locally or to ensure the sort of freshness of ingredient that we seek.

We have now made arrangements for all our dairy products, meat, poultry (which will now all be free-range), fish, bread, fruit and veg to be provided by very local suppliers, which has already won loud applause from the local farmers and businesses. Deliveries are made in reusable containers instead of cardboard boxes, and the savings which are already apparent are being used to extend our menu choices  - we are now including game, for example - and to acquire a wider selection of fresh fish.

We retain all our catering staff, including our wonderful new Head Chef, Rob Hirst, and his team, and our talented Catering Manager Paula Fearnley, who can be contacted with any suggestions or comments on pef@portregis.com.

Regarding the fabric of the school, I am delighted to announce that, having dealt over the last four years with such major repair and maintenance items as re-roofing Centenary Hall and the Pre-Prep, installing new energy-efficient boilers, re-pointing the Mansion and re-surfacing the drives, we are about to embark on the building of a new Academic Block, which will provide 14 spacious and well-appointed classrooms, with staff offices and resource rooms, next to the Music School overlooking Bob’s Pond.  Architecturally elegant, it will also be eco-friendly, incorporating a revolutionary natural ventilation system pioneered by Cambridge University, which will operate in parallel with a geothermal heating and cooling system, which involves 12 bore holes each descending 80 metres into the ground, obviating the need for any conventional boilers or the burning of fossil fuels and monitoring not only temperature but also carbon dioxide levels.  Work has already started and we expect the building to be ready for use in September 2008 and for us, finally, to be rid of the unsightly and, in some respects, uncomfortable wooden classrooms we still have, several in inconvenient locations on the campus.

It is also exciting to look back over some significant successes achieved over the year.

The 1st Football X1 won all its matches in the Autumn term as well as the three 6-a-side tournaments they entered, and they went to the IAPS National Finals as Southern Area Champions and did splendidly to reach the semis, going out to the eventual winners.    The 2nds, 3rds and 4ths were also all unbeaten, so well done to all concerned. During the Easter holidays two of the boys were selected for the IAPS National U13 side that played Derby County at Pride Park with one of them being named the ISFA Prep Schools Footballer of the Year. Well done boys! (For a bit of fun have a look at the video "It's a beautiful game" by clicking on the link in the News Headlines).

The Rugby season also went remarkably well, with some exceptional results achieved.  The 1st XV won all their games and succeeded in matching last year's unbeaten season.    The 2nd XV won all their matches against other 2nd XVs; the 3rds lost just one game, and the 4ths were unbeaten.  In fact the five senior teams lost just 5 of their 40 matches, scoring 1362 points and conceding just 204. The Junior sides did splendidly too, with a talented Colts A side winning 11 of their 13 games, and the Bs going undefeated.  The Junior Colts As lost just one game and the Minis two. This was also the term for the (brief) Rugby Sevens season, and our boys Port Regis won the title at The Downs tournament, and were also finalists at our own competition, semi-finalists at Millfield and quarter-finalists at the Rosslyn Park Nationals.

The afternoon timetable has been reorganised to allow juniors and seniors to play their games at different times, thereby maximising the use of specialist games coaches as well as facilities.  The Autumn term saw extraordinary benefits being conferred on hockey skills, with time on the astro being doubled.  The U8s and U9s have come on apace; the U10As lost just 2 of their 14 games, with the Bs and Cs unbeaten; and the U11As and Bs lost just 4 of their 22 fixtures combined, with the As winning the Port Regis tournament.  Well done girls!

We were also really delighted to learn that 3 of our senior girls had made the England Rounders squad - that makes 6 of them in the last three years - with one of them captaining the side!

The children once again excelled in their Gymnastics. At the IAPS National Championships which we hosted, the U10, U11 and U13 teams all won gold, whilst Emily (U11) and Danielle (U13) were crowned National Individual Champions.  Port Regis won the overall schools title for the fourth year running. Danielle has been selected for the Great Britain Gymnastics squad for 2007. She is a member of the World Class Start squad and is on course for her dream of selection for the 2012 GB Olympics team.  Well done Danielle!

The boys did well too, with three of them      performing splendidly in the South West Apparatus Championships in Exeter, with Joe taking the gold in the U12 Voluntary competition.

The Boys' Hockey season also went well , as did the Girls' Netball. The girls' 1st Rounders team progressed through to the quarter-finals in the JET National competition shortly before half-term and the 1st Cricket X1 ended the season unbeaten.

It was also a fine year for Drama. The B Form Play was The Taming of the Shrew  by  William Shakespeare, abridged by Martin Lamb and Penelope Middleboe.  Some will remember our production of the abridged Macbeth three years ago, and this year’s production was also an entry for the Shakespeare Schools' Festival, which occurs in the South-West every three years. The Appraiser was most positive in his review,

" Port Regis School's version of The Taming of the Shrew was most accomplished and I would be grateful if you could pass my thanks and congratulations to all those involved.  The levels of commitment, involvement and concentration were very high, with the children bringing great energy and a sense of fun.    I was most impressed by the children's ability to capture and communicate Shakespeare's intentions, especially their use of facial expression and vocal tone.   As both a director of Shakespeare with young people and as a frequent audience member, I never cease to be enthused and excited by their ability to do exactly what he intended - bring his stories to life, for and with an audience.  Your children certainly did that, giving a great deal of pleasure to those of us who had the priviledge of watching their very enjoyable production.   Again, my thanks and congratulations to all involved."

The Lower School play was Fairy Crystal and the Really Big Lie by Alison Chaplin. The enthusiasm of the young cast was most impressive, as was the quality of their performances.

The appointment of Shaun Bracey to the post of Director of Music has been a tremendous success.

There are now over 400 individual music lessons a week taking place, and we have already enjoyed a number of delightful concerts and performances in Saturday Assembly.

Last year was our 125th Anniversary.  The school was founded as Praetoria House in London in 1881. A year later it moved to Folkestone before transferring to Broadstairs and being refounded in 1921 as Port Regis. After evacuation during the war, the school settled here in Motcombe Park in 1947 where it consolidated and developed its reputation as one of the finest Prep Schools in the land. This year we have celebrated much success and reaffirmed, I hope, what has made this school something rather special: an understanding of the true meaning of education and a set of values that embraces care and kindness; consideration for others; friendship; good manners; warmth; honesty and all-round decency.  The vision, inspiration, dedication and hard work of our predecessors  - Governors, Headmasters, staff, parents and children - and that of all those here today have helped in a thousand different ways make this school  what it is. It is our ongoing responsibility to ensure that Port Regis continues to be a beacon for other schools to follow in all things and that its children continue to go out into the world proud of who they are and where they have come from, and ready to make the world a better place for their being in it.
