Organisation
The School:
Puddletown is situated 4 miles east of the county town of Dorchester on the A35. Puddletown is a mixture of old and new, with many picturesque buildings and new housing developments on the outskirts of the village.
Puddletown First School serves a wide catchment area, with children coming from Puddletown, Tolpuddle, Briantspuddle, Burleston, Crawthorne, Dewlish, Higher Brockhampton, Higher Kingston, Kingston Maurward, Lower Brockhampton, Pallington, Piddlehinton, Rogers Hill, Southover, Stinsford, Throop, Tincleton, Tolpuddle, Troytown, Turnerspuddle and Waddock. Many of the children are transported to school by bus.
The school was built in 1864. The main building now comprises of the hall, the library, the ICT suite, the Year 4 classroom, a resource room, the school office and the staff room. There are three temporary classroom units which house Reception class and Years 1 to 3.
The school grounds consist of a playground at the front of the school and a small grassed area at the side and to the back of the school. The grounds are being re-developed by 'Puddletown Groundforce', a group of parent helpers, partly funded by Dorset Gardens Trust, in order to create an external learning environment for the children that is educational, attractive and environmentally-friendly.

Curriculum
At Puddletown First, we aim to provide a broad and balanced curriculum, linking areas of learning where possible and relating learning experiences to the outside world. Visits and visitors play an important part in this.
The 1988 Education Act requires that these subjects are taught:
- Core subjects: English, Mathematics, Science, Information Communication Technology, Religious Education
- Foundation subjects: Design Technology, Geography, History, Music, Art and Physical Education.
Personal, Social and Health Education and Citizenship are not statutory but are an important part of our curriculum.
Reception Class follows the Foundation Stage curriculum which covers the areas of:
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development,
- Communication, Language and Literacy development,
- Maths,
- Knowledge and understanding of the world,
- Physical and creative development.
We encourage children to take pride in their work and to share success . To support this process, we hold a 'Good Work' assembly once a week where children’s work is celebrated. Every child is included each term.
