Shaftesbury Secondary School is a thriving 11-18 Voluntary Controlled School for approximately 1000 students. It is set high above the Blackmore Vale on the edge of the ancient and picturesque town of Shaftesbury. It was awarded Sports College status in 1999, and is the only maintained school in the county of Dorset to offer boarding education.

Our Mission Statement

To empower every individual who participates in our community to realise his/her aspirations.

Our aims:

We aim to inspire every individual by

  • Creating a sense of belonging, where everyone feels a valued member of the community
  • Developing role models whom we can admire, respect, relate to and seek out for guidance
  • Promoting a sense of accomplishment through recognition for doing our best, whatever it is, on personal, social and academic levels
  • Generating fun and excitement, curiosity and creativity on the trail to learning
  • Encouraging the spirit of adventure, whereby we understand and appreciate what it means to take a risk, be successful, to fail and to try again
  • Promotion opportunities for leadership and responsibility, whereby we express our ideas and accept the consequences of our actions

Ethos

Pervading the ethos of our school are the values of our Christian Foundation, the ideals of the Olympic movement and the spirit of internationalism.

We value the uniqueness of every human being regardless of gender, age, ethnic origin, creed or sexual orientation. We teach the importance of love and respect, tolerance, forgiveness, the need to work for peace and justice, honesty, selflessness and loyalty.

Shaftesbury School is an internationally outward-looking community promoting harmony, participation, friendly competition and opportunities for recognition and celebration.

Religious Education

In Years 7 to 9, a similar programme is taught to all students, embracing all of the above subjects. Students are taught mainly in the same class in Year 7, apart from Mathematics. This subject operates a system of “setting”. In Years 8 and 9, students are also “setted” in Languages and Science.

Towards the end of Year 9, students prepare for the programmes of study that they would wish to pursue in Years 10 and 11. Details of the process of selecting subject preferences are provided in a separate booklet and given to all students in the Spring of Year 9.

OFSTED 2004: “The curriculum is evolving well, adapting to meet the needs of all pupils”.

Students are encouraged to choose subjects that fall within a recommended “Pathway”. Pathways allow for either a balanced set of choices, or for a particular emphasis to be developed (for example, in the Arts, or Languages).

A small number of students study an alternative vocational course involving attendance at the North Dorset Skills Centre or another Training Provider, for one day each week. Courses are run in
Catering
Performance Engineering Operations
Salon Services
Horse Care
Motor Vehicle Maintenance
Land-based Studies

Most courses lead to assessment at GCSE level, although the school also makes use of alternative forms of accreditation for a minority of students, for example the NVQ (level 1 or 2) and BTEC.

Towards the end of Year 10, all students undertake a two-week programme of Work Experience.

Full details of all Key Stage Four courses are published in the Pathways Booklet, available to parents and students in advance of the choosing process in Year 9.
