Welcome to Arrow Vale High School – A Specialist Sports College

I am pleased to welcome you to Arrow Vale High School.

Arrow Vale is a mixed 13-18 comprehensive situated in eastern Redditch. The school is set in an attractive setting and caters for 900 students with a Sixth Form of 150. We provide an excellent learning environment for our students and as a Sports College, for the wider community.

Arrow Vale is a happy place – our students tell us so. We want them to be happy so that they are able to use their talents and skills to achieve the potential that exists in all individuals. We want our students to experience a quality education which sets the highest standards and aspirations for all students. The ethos of the school centres on the core values of academic success, discipline, personal responsibility and self-respect.

The curriculum offered at Arrow Vale reflects the varied needs of our students. It is broad and offers challenges and opportunities from the most able student to those who benefit from a more work-centred or vocational approach. Support is offered to our most gifted students as well as those with special educational needs. Our curriculum is delivered by a team of highly specialised and motivated staff – both teaching and non-teaching. Teaching and learning are supported by strong pastoral care through form tutors and heads of year so that the individual needs of students are catered for.

We aim to work in partnership with parents, middle schools and the wider community to provide our students with the skills and experiences they need to become active contributors in the world beyond school.

About Us

Arrow Vale Community High School is a 13-18 mixed co-educational comprehensive school, serving the eastern side of Redditch. It currently has 900 pupils on roll with 150 in the Sixth Form. In January 1999 the School was awarded 'Specialist Sports College' status and in addition has 'Access Initiative Funding' to enable full wheelchair access. The staffing in September 2005 was equivalent to 63 full time teachers who work in attractive modern buildings, the oldest of which date from 1976 when the School was founded. The buildings are grouped around two quadrangles, consisting of a splendid Sports Centre including an ICT suite, a floodlit Astroturf facility, main building with learning resource centre, Sixth Form facilities and administration area, a magnificent theatre and drama workshop plus a music suite. Construction of a new Sixth Form block is due to begin in November 2006. The grounds are pleasantly landscaped and well maintained, and it could be accurately said that Arrow Vale offers as pleasing an environment to work in as anywhere in the County.

Local Area

Redditch, which was a small industrial town in 1965, has seen forty years of rapid redevelopment in which its population has more than doubled. It has a great deal of reasonably priced housing both near the School and further afield, a large modern shopping centre and one of the best road systems anywhere in the country.

The countryside around Redditch is pretty with a number of attractive villages. The town is ideally placed for days out with Worcester, Warwick and Stratford-on-Avon all within half an hour's drive. The Cotswolds are easily reached within forty minutes. Much of the countryside west of the Severn is idyllic and unspoiled. Redditch advertised itself as 'the hub of England', the motorway network being only ten minutes away and a regular train service to Birmingham New Street.

Staffing Structure

Staff is organised into Departments. Some of the larger subject areas contain further posts of responsibility for individual subjects or disciplines. Cross curricular groups are established and focus on areas including teaching and learning, self-evaluation and induction. Some of these areas have discreet teaching time whilst others are taught within the subject context. The delivery of these strands is the collective responsibility of all staff.

ICT Provision

The School is networked and has benefited from Worcestershire policy to achieve connectivity at broadband level between all high schools, libraries and County Hall. This has enabled both curriculum and administrative enhancements to work in each area. All teachers have laptops.

Specialist Sports College

As a Specialist School we take our responsibility to the local and wider community very seriously and are looking to become a focus for lifelong learning and education participation in its widest sense, as well as within the curriculum framework. We seek to maximise the gifts and talents in all of our students and staff.
