Woodrow First School opened in 1971 when Redditch was deemed a new town and built on an expanding residential area which is well established. We have continued to thrive in recent years and have demonstrated our commitment to providing the best possible education by pursuing, from a broad community base, ambitious initiatives linked to identified priorities.
The number on roll including our LEA supported Nursery unit presently stands at 330. The Governors have been pro-active in publicising the ideals that we hold true to, recently having a video produced as part of the new prospectus. |

The Nursery unit caters for part-time three year old children. Its well-equipped surroundings help to foster trends conducive to learning from an early age.
The Nursery has developed its outdoor environment and further plans include forest school initiatives. The quality of education in Nursery has been recognised as a feature of the school. There is a close liaison with the Reception and under the umbrella of the Foundation stage there is a seamless transition into mainstream school with the emphasis on curricular and social links. |

We have a learner swimming pool which has undergone a major re-build worth over Ł150,000 during 2002/03 and completion of the final phase of the project in Summer 2003. This unique facility epitomises the commitment of the governing body to providing quality opportunities for our children. |

The school building is well maintained, both internally and externally. Developments within the life of the last School Improvement Plan include a new IT suite, Library, a dedicated Performing Arts room (NOF financed), a family room and a complete redecoration. |

In November 2002 after many attempts the school secured a catering company to provide hot meals daily. The uptake has been staggering with up to 70 % of all children benefiting.
Woodrow First School has had two very successful OFSTEDs in the last six years. In the most recent in June 2001 the inspectors commented on a good and improving school with many very good features. The quality of teaching was found to be high and there were no unsatisfactory lessons throughout the duration of the inspection. |

Parents wishing to register their child for Nursery may do so at anytime.
Children are admitted to Reception classes at the start of the year in which they are five years old. In the event of the number of applications to the school exceeding the number of places available, the following admissions priority will be used to decide the offers to be made and to establish a waiting list for places which subsequently become vacant.
The Governors are committed to making class sizes as small as possible. At present, on average, there are 25 pupils in each class.
The children are taught in mixed ability classes. The children follow a programme which matches their needs and abilities.
A variety of teaching styles and strategies are used throughout the Foundation Stage, KS1 and KS2 in order to deliver the National Curriculum in the most effective manner.
At the end of Year Four children transfer to Middle School. |
