About Us Burley St Matthias is a 210-place Church of England Primary School, one mile from the city centre in North West Leeds. Overlooking the rich industrial landscape of the Kirkstall Valley, we are within walking distance of a Nature Reserve, Kirkstall Abbey, Armley Mills Industrial Museum, Burley Park, the River Aire and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal.
We cater for 4 – 11 year olds in two Victorian buildings, which have undergone extensive refurbishment internally to offer modern facilities for our learners. The North Building houses the younger children from Reception to Year 2 and the South Building accommodates children from Years 3 to 6. Each building has a playground and a field. There are two spacious halls and all the classrooms are light and airy.
We have an excellent Computer Suite, separate mini suite and all classrooms have interactive white boards.
We aim to provide a calm, caring and stimulating environment, where children learn through a wide variety of experiences. Our children are taught to value and respect the diversity of religions, cultures and customs and to value one another. The last Ofsted Inspection Report found the school offered a good level of enrichment to the curriculum and applauded the quality of its teaching, particularly the positive start given to children in Reception and the stimulating final year in Year 6. They particularly praised the personal development of the pupils, reflected in their good behaviour and positive attitudes to school.
We have a positive approach to discipline so that children are praised and rewarded for every good effort and many other reward systems, which are given for achievement in many areas of school life.
Mission Statement Burley St. Matthias is a caring, multi-cultural school founded on Christran principles, where all our children are nurtured in an atmosphere of love, acceptance and trust.
We celebrate the uniqueness of all individuals by encouraging them to achieve their full potential through an enriched, challenging environment.
We promote respect and self worth, contributing positively to the world in which we live, secure in the knowledge that:
"Everyone is Special"
