As from September 2008, we will be introducing a new school uniform as follows:-

Horbury School believes that students should come to school smartly dressed and we expect that all our students will attend school wearing the school uniform correctly.

We believe that a school uniform gives students a pride in their appearance, a sense of belonging to the school and goes a long way in assisting the discipline and reputation of a school. The school is a place of work and it is important that students recognise the need for appropriate dress.

The basic principles are:

  • Items of uniform should conform to traditional school uniform and not be “fashion items”
  • Students are not allowed to wear denim jackets, denim trousers/jeans or skirts anywhere on the school campus.
  • Black low heeled sensible school shoes should be worn. Black trainers and fashion boots such as Timberland are unacceptable. For safety reasons open-toed shoes, very small or stiletto-type heels, platform soles or backless shoes are not allowed.
  • Jewellery and make-up are not allowed. The only exception is one stud or small sleeper in each ear. For health and safety reasons students will not be allowed to wear jewellery in any other body piercing. As a privilege students in Year 11 are permitted to wear items of jewellery and make-up at the school’s discretion (as long as the jewellery does not constitute a health & safety hazard, e.g. large hoop earrings). Parents are advised that any valuable items worn are at the owner’s risk and that the school takes no responsibility for the loss of any valuable items.
  • Blazers with the school logo are compulsory wear in school. The blazers are available from school via our uniform supplier Trutex. In addition knitted v-neck jumpers or tank-tops with the school logo may be worn. No other jumpers/ hooded tops/sweatshirts can be worn on the school site nor can such items be worn instead of a coat.
  • In inclement or cold weather, a dark-coloured outdoor coat or the school coat may be worn to come to school in but not in classrooms or corridors.
  • No baseball caps are allowed anywhere on the school site and no other hats should be worn in classrooms or corridors. (Students with a medical condition may wear a plain black baseball cap by arrangement).
  • Extreme hairstyles or colouring are not allowed and will be measured by what is appropriate in a school environment.
  • Top buttons of shirts should be fastened at all times and ties clearly visible.
  • Students should not bring in personal music players eg. MP3 players etc. into school. They are valuable items and we cannot accept responsibility for them. Moreover they may disrupt learning and will be confiscated by staff.
  • Body piercings are not allowed. Should a student wish to have a body piercing it should be removed by September.
  • The school reserves the right to ask a child to go home and change if his/her uniform does not fulfil the criteria in this policy (subject to parental permission).
  • Trainers may only be worn if a doctor’s note has been provided.
