North Yorkshire County Council (NYCC) provides a complete range of education services. These pages provide information for parents, pupils and students, school governors and others.

Our work incorporates all aspects of education for life through the provision of early years education, schools, adult learning and the youth service. We are responsible for 388 schools, two Pupil Referral Units, Adult Learning and Youth Service provision providing learning opportunities for over 87,000 students and 24,000 adult learners across North Yorkshire. In addition we have an Outdoor Education service and an Instrumental Music service with centres all over the county.

Our aim is to promote "excellence for all" through lifelong learning for the people who live, work and study in North Yorkshire

Children's work permits

Children and young people can work on a part time basis. However there are restrictions depending on their age, on the number of hours they can work and the type of employment.

All part time employment of young people of school age is subject to regulations by the Local Education Authority and employers and young people will need to apply for a work permit. If you wish to apply for a work permit, please download and complete the application form below. Your potential employer, Headteacher and parent/guardian must also sign the form before you return it to your Local Education Office. Any employer who allows a child of school age to work, without first obtaining a work permit, is breaking the law and could be prosecuted.

Children and young people of school age working in entertainment require a Performance Licence. You do not require a licence, however, if:

  • the performance is unpaid;
  • does not require you to be absent from school;
  • the number of performances is less than five and no other performances have been undertaken in the previous six months.

Under the 1968 Performance of Children Regulations, the producer in charge of the performance is responsible for ensuring all children are properly licensed to rehearse or perform.

If you are entering higher education and studying a full-time course you can apply for student support. The system of student support is applicable to all students from England and Wales and the regulations governing it are set by central government.

The student finance application arrangements for the 2007/8 academic year will be different in some Local Authority areas throughout the UK. This year some Authorities, including North Yorkshire County Council, are involved in a pilot scheme to review the way students apply for loans, tuition fee and grant support. Consequently your application will be dealt with entirely by the Student Loans Company (SLC) from its office in Darlington.

If you are returning to study in 2007/8, an application form will be sent to you in the normal manner. Once completed, your application must be returned to the Student Loans Company at the address below. Your entitlement to support will be unaffected by this change.

If you are starting a new course in the 2007/8 academic year and you are currently in Year 13 at school or attending a college of further education, application forms will be available at your school or college from April 2007. Once completed, your application should be returned to the Student Loans Company at the address below. Otherwise you can contact the SLC Customer Support Office on 0845 6077577 and a form will be posted to you.

Full and detailed information is available by downloading the Guide to Financial Support for Higher Education Students below or by visiting the Student Finance Website.
