The school is situated 4 miles north east of the centre of Leeds. It lies on the border of the Templenewsam Estate. At present there are 290 children on roll aged between 4 and 11.
It is housed in a two-storey building dating from January 1975. There are two outdoor play areas, one at each end of the school and we use the spacious playing fields adjacent to the school, which is part of the Templenewsam Estate. The area of the school is totally enclosed by a 2-metre high palisade fence, with two pedestrian entrances, one beside the main driveway into school and one which opens onto the new pathway from Colton.
The school offers light, airy classrooms, which are attractive and spacious, large halls and a fully equipped ICT Suite. Our plans for this forthcoming year include a new Research/Learning Centre, which is fully equipped with 8 computers and a new Reference Library.
There are also computer workstations in each classroom.
Our Parent/Community Room has been re-furbished and re-decorated to provide comfortable, attractive accommodation, which is well used by our parents as well as other community groups such as the YMCA, local Childminders, Park Lane College and the Parent Partnership Project.
We offer quality childcare provision before and after school in our Whitkirk Kidz Club (WhiKidZ). The Club is open each day from 7.30am before school and until 6.00pm after school and we also run a very popular Holiday Playscheme during the school holidays.
We also house the Templegate Tiny Tots Pre-School within our school, which provides private playgroup opportunities to pre-school children. All these groups are part of our community and offer much support to our school.
The grounds of the school are delightful and we have developed areas around school as part of our outside classrooms. These include shaded areas in each playground and a supply of games for the children to use. Playground Friends help to organise these games and assist the younger children with playtime games and help to resolve conflicts.
We are proud to have been awarded the Activemark Gold Award by Sport England for our achievements in the sporting arena, which recognises the opportunities that we offer our pupils.
We have also been awarded both the Advanced Level of the Leeds Healthy School Standard and the National Standard in recognition of our high standards of care for our children, our environment and our physical activities, which promotes a healthy attitude in all walks of school life – and beyond!
