Abbotskerswell Primary School
Side Lane, Newton Abbot,TQ12 5NS
01626 353605

We are a four-class primary school currently with 93 children, who are taught in mixed year groups. The School is set in the delightful village of Abbotskerswell near Newton Abbot, a beautiful environment in which to educate our children with willow sculptures and a small adventure playground. We have a friendly, hardworking, team of staff, Governors and parents who all help to make this a popular school.

The School was originally built in 1875 and redeveloped in 1995. It consists of a main school with hall, one classroom, a library/resources area and offices for the headteacher and administrator. There are three temporary classrooms and extensive grounds including a wild area with pond and an adventure playground. We have our own 12½ metre heated swimming pool with a changing room.

The School is fortunate in being well resourced for all national curriculum subjects. There are many resources in the school including colour T.Vs., videos, radio cassette recorders/cd players, digital projector and cameras. There are facilities for all curriculum areas. We are well equipped to meet the requirements of the National Curriculum in Information Technology and are linked to the Internet for all classes.

Our children work and play well together. They are very fortunate to have a wide range of extra curricular activities to enhance their education.

We participate in activities beyond the school such as educational day visits to local places of interest and residential visits in Years 3-6.

The school aims to foster :

  • encourage and develop a love of learning, a sense of curiosity and the attitudes necessary for children to take full advantage of our exciting and broadly balanced curriculum;
  • respect for oneself and for other people, including those who are different and the development of high self esteem;
  • work at the very best level of which one is capable and to strive to improve on that level;
  • a sense of citizenship which recognises both rights and responsibilities
  • creativity in all aspects of school life;
  • participation in and enjoyment of physical activities;
  • learning as an enjoyable and challenging experience;
  • the sense of feeling a valued part of the community embracing family, the village, and other schools;
  • respect for and awareness of, both the immediate and the wider environment, and the use of limited resources in ways which are not wasteful;
  • a sense of wonder, an appreciation of the spiritual dimension of life, and an enquiring mind;
  • the development of a full life outside of school, a positive contribution to society and the fruitful use of leisure time, encompassing lifelong learning.

School admission policies are the responsibility of the Local Education Authority. Each Devon school serves a particular area, but parents may apply for a place in any school. In general terms the area served by Abbotskerswell County Primary School consists of the village of Abbotskerswell .

We would welcome you to look around our school, even though you may not live in our traditional 'catchment area'.

Statutory School Age

Your child must be in school the term following his/her 5 th birthday (unless you decide to educate at home, in which case you must contact the Admissions Team who will advise you on the process).

Child's 5th Birthday Start School

  • 1 st September – 28/29 th February September
  • 1 st March – 31 st August January

Admission earlier than the two points above is approved only on exceptional social or medical grounds (normally supported by a letter fro Social Services or a GP). Any agreement would be for one term only and within the academic year when your child would normally be admitted.

Deferred Admission

Deferred admission is where, when you have been offered a place, you can decide to delay your child's actual start date until they reach statutory school age, within the same academic year.

Children born between 1 st September and 28/29 February can defer entry until the start of the spring term (January). Children born between 1 March and 31 August do not have an automatic right to defer admission.

You still need to apply as normal by the deadline and, after a place is offered, you must inform the Head Teacher that you wish to defer. Your child's place at the school will be kept open for them to join at the later date.

We have an extensive programme of pre-school activities and liaisons. These include home visits, use of school facilities by the playgroup and a series of pre-school activity packs available on loan.

Entrant's List

To help with forward planning we would appreciate any expressions of interest completed for the pupils by the time they are 3 years old. This aids future planning. All admissions are handled by Devon County Council and can be contacted by the following ways:-

Address: The Admissions Team, Room 120, County Hall, Topsham Road , Exeter , EX2 4QG

Telephone:- (01392) 382055

Class Size and Organisation

As we are a small school, we have mixed classes with more than one year group.

Most classes have two year groups. Within the classes a variety of teaching styles are adopted, appropriate to the age and ability of the children. At various times children will be taught individually, in groups or as a whole class.
