I would like to welcome you on behalf of DHSB to our school website. Whether you are a pupil of DHSB, a parent or you are wanting to find out more about us, perhaps with the view to joining us, please do take time to browse our site.
Devonport High School for Boys is a Foundation Grammar, Specialist Engineering and Specialist Languages School located in the South West of the city of Plymouth. We have a long-standing reputation for academic excellence and our broad provision of extracurricular activities - be it performance, adventure, competition or sport.
Over recent years as an Engineering Specialist School* we have been pleased to invest substantial extra funds in exciting new Technology equipment and to enhance our Maths and Science facilities. In 2006 we were judged a High Performing Specialist School and successfully applied for our second Specialist Status for Modern Languages. We will provide stimulating courses in French, German and Spanish which will build upon our ‘Latin for All’ foundation, and will challenge our able linguists with Mandarin Chinese. The Governors have also been able to enhance the resources available to English, Humanities, and the Expressive Arts to ensure a balanced provision across the whole curriculum. Recent projects include the new Sports Hall, Refectory, Music Centre, Fitness Suite, Library, Reception, Staff Room, ATC 197 Squadron HQ, Individual Needs Centre and Sixth Form Centre. The Theatre Project is underway now – please see our appeal.
You'll find information about the school, dates for your diary, downloads to help with study and answers to some of the questions you may have. There's even an opportunity to tour the school without having to leave your PC!
It is our intention constantly to improve this site and take advantage of the very latest in internet technology to keep you better informed and closer to what's happening at DHSB, and therefore any ideas or suggestions you have would be more than welcome.
So without further ado, I will leave you to look around.

Since 1896 Devonport High School for Boys has provided an opportunity for able boys from Plymouth, SW Devon and SE Cornwall to pursue a broad academic curriculum in an atmosphere that encourages and rewards success.
As a Foundation School the Governing Body is responsible for the budget, site and admissions policy. The Governors are committed to developing the school while maintaining it as a grammar school with pupils being selected on the basis of academic aptitude, without regard to means or background.
In 2002 we were delighted to be designated by the DfES as one of the first four Specialist Engineering Colleges in the country. The extra funding for our specialist status is helping to raise standards throughout the school and has provided new facilities and courses in maths, science, technology and systems engineering.
Four years on, we were delighted to be judged by the DCSF as a "High Performing Specialist School" and encouraged to take on a second specialism. From 2007, as a Languages Specialist School, we are committed to raising the profile of an already successful faculty, building on our foundation in Classics, French and German by adding Spanish and Mandarin Chinese. We will have smaller classes and pilot fast-track GCSE courses to better hold the attention of the boys, in parallel to developing the use of the Internet to encourage International friendships. The Lycee de Garcons de Devonport: Centre d'Etude International will play a prominent role in this work. This work will be further supported by a European Union funded Comenius Project.
We provide a disciplined, well structured and happy environment in which our pupils work hard and play hard to achieve levels of excellence that reflect their potential and our expectations. All pupils wear uniform and are encouraged to show courtesy and respect to others - themes that are central to the school ethos.
Throughout the school there is an emphasis on the development of personal qualities, on the widening of pupil's horizons, and on preparation for a purposeful and caring role in society. At 18 our leavers are well qualified for entry to the University course or career of their choice.
The school offers a wide range of extracurricular activities including competitive sport, drama, music, community service and expeditions in the UK and overseas. All boys are in one of four houses and this gives further opportunity for representative sport and other competition, all of which contribute to the House Point tally that leads to the annual award of the St Levan Shield.
The boys tell me that attending Devonport High School for Boys is interesting, challenging and fun ......my staff and I work hard to maintain that tradition.
