STOP PRESS: Mrs Claire Grant, currently at East the Water Primary School has been appointed as Acting Headteacher from September 2007.

There was a well supported opportunity on Thursday 12th July for parents and children to meet her and Governors to explore the development of the school.

To help everybody keep up to date with school events, you can download, view or print the most recent newsletters. Just click on the dated symbols at the bottom of this page.

SPORTS DAY: It was so good to be able to dodge the recent rain, and to benefit from the generosity of Mr and Mrs Esmond Cole in allowing us to have Sports on the "FunDay field" this year. As you can see on the right the action was fast and furious and this year included several pre-school children and families. See the news section for more about our sports and the mixture between individual competitive events and team challenges.
To view our Ofsted report, written in June 2006, go to the 'other websites' button.

There is lots to see on the site. Why not visit the News/ Vacancies section to see the latest information?

Children have been extremely busy this term. Class 1 have just presented their assembly, featuring a lot of excellent singing- all all about 'The Bad Tempered Ladybird'.

There has been lots of Sporting activity including Multi-sports, Volleyball and Cricket. We took part in a Volleyball Festival at Bratton Fleming School, pictured right, and Year 3 and 4 children travelled to Barnstaple and Pilton Cricket ground for a festival involving 18 teams.

Both classes are now having Tag Rugby lessons on Fridays.
Recently, the school took part in the Mothers Union centenary.

This involved contributing to a village Art and Craft display as well as participating in the Flower Festival in the Church. The theme was "Women of the Bible"

The school also sang and presented a play about Esther.

We are delighted that the Mothers Union generously contributed £800 raised during the festival.
The Parish Council also raised £273.81 for us during the Fun Day. This support is very much appreciated and will go towards the development of the triangle of land adjacent to the school. Click on the digger on the NEWS page to see the plan for this.

On Wednesday 18th July we presented Alice The Musical, based on the play by Out of the Ark.

It was great this year to also present our dress rehearsal to residents of Chelfam care Home.
Th 39 performers displayed a multitude of talent ranging from singing, which featured 13 soloists, great dancing and fantastic acting.

Threatened by the fearsome combination of Queen of Hearts, Jodie and executioners Owen, Josh and Oliver, the audience rose magnificently to the challenge and joined in the singing enthusiastically.

The rest of this page is about our school Values and Aims.
At Goodleigh School, we value

Ourselves. We value ourselves as unique human beings, capable of spiritual, moral, intellectual and physical growth and development.

Our Relationships. We value others for themselves, not only for what they have or what they can do for us. We value positive relationships as fundamental to the development and fulfillment of ourselves and others, and to the good of the community.

Our Society. We value truth, freedom, justice, human rights, the rule of law and collective effort for the common good. In particular, we value families as sources of love and support for all their members, and as the basis of a society in which people care for others.

Our environment. We value the environment, both natural and shaped by humanity, as the basis of life and a source of wonder and inspiration.
Here are the AIMS of the school.

Each child has a unique mixture of talents and we encourage every individual to reach their full potential by providing a curriculum which aims to meet academic, social, moral, physical, emotional and spiritual needs.School aims to be inspiring, enjoyable, supportive, exciting and challenging, giving children and adults a real sense of achievement.

Learning is a lifelong process, and the partnership between home and school is a vital element of this. We value the experiences which children bring to school and build on these. Parents are given every opportunity to be fully involved in school life.

As a Church school, our ethos is Christian. In addition, we encourage children to respect and begin to understand the range of cultural and religious beliefs within contemporary Britain and beyond.

There are important skills, attitudes, and aspects of knowledge, which children learn in Primary School. The National Curriculum is the basis for this, enhanced with a variety of creative and physical experiences to provide a broad, balanced and creative curriculum.

We aim to prepare children physically for a healthy lifestyle by instilling enjoyment of regular physical activity.

It is important that children develop a good understanding of themselves both as individuals and as learners. They are encouraged to take responsibility for their actions and to build co-operative and respectful relationships with others.

Children are encouraged to see themselves both as valuable members of the school and as part of the local community. Our intention is to prepare them to become responsible citizens, willing and able to play their part within a sustainable, global and rapidly changing world.

We aim to instill in children a respect for the natural world which encourages them to work towards preserving it's balance and diversity.

The silk paintings of Rainbow Fish were produced by Class 1 children as part of their study of the book. Older children created the flower fairies after a visit to Rosemoor Gardens.

We check in a variety of ways that what we actually do matches the above statements and seek to continuously improve our school. The school was last inspected in June 2006. The findings can be found by following the link on the 'Other websites' button.

If you have not made up your mind about which school to send your child to, or if you would simply like to see around the school, please telephone or write to make arrangements for a visit. Parents are always welcome.
Prospective parents are welcome to contact the school for further information including SAT results. In common with other small schools, our results are not published here or in the press as for many years we have had less than 10 children in Year 6.

Teaching and Learning

Our prime aim is to develop positive attitudes to learning within ALL our children.

So, in our teaching we seek to provide a wider, broad based curriculum into which the Literacy and Numeracy strategies and the whole of the National Curriculum can be placed.

PLANNING: Our curriculum, teaching, learning and assessment policies are drawn up, used and revised on a regular basis.

We aim to develop curiosity, initiative, self-confidence and esteem and self discipline, together with a sense of belonging to the school, and the local community.

As a small school we think that one of our strengths lies in the development of personal relationships. We have time to tend to issues of personal, social and moral education due to our scale. We get to know children and parents over the course of several years.

STAFFING: The children spend more time with individual teachers than they might do in a larger school. The teacher and the child enjoy a sustained relationship that allows for a greater understanding of individual concerns and needs.

>>>Details of current projects for Class1 and Class 2 are circulated at the starts of terms and can also be downloaded by clicking on the symbols at the bottom of the page.

COMPUTERS: We are committed to the use of modern technology across the curriculum and the computer suite as well as the computer area in Class 1 is used to support and enhance the day to day work of our children.

LIBRARY: We also believe books are important. The PFTA have supported us in buying books as well as enhancing our library and reading areas.

MUSIC: Goodleigh School pupils enjoy music. At present, pupils experience a wide range of instruments. Guitar and keyboard lessons are available.

All pupils use drums, percussion instruments and are taught singing as well as composing. IT is used to support Music, and all older pupils have recently had 6 weeks of clarinet lessons.

Homework is given regularly to our older children, and daily reading at home is expected.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION: We aim to help children develop an understanding of the Christian faith and other world religions and lead them to an understanding of social and moral values.

Our school follows the Devon Agreed syllabus for Religious Education.

Acts of worship provide time for the whole school to share experiences of worship, closeness and celebration of a Christian nature. They are one means whereby Christian values and principles may be reflected and affirmed.

If parents wish to withdraw their children from our arrangements for Religious Education or from collective worship then please contact the school. LINKS WITH PLAYGROUP AND PARENTS: In order to help children to grow, progress and to enjoy their time with us we value our links with parents. We take time to prepare our youngest children for full time school education.
We have good links with our village playgroup, and work closely to make the transition between playgroup and school flow as smooth as possible.
A fortnightly newsletter is distributed to homes via the pupils, containing news and notices for pupils and parents.

CHILDREN AS INDIVIDUALS:The school aims to be fully inclusive and to meet the special needs of those who need additional support to access the curriculum.

Click on the file at the bottom of the page to see what Charlotte wrote about her Greek pot.

DISCIPLINE: Children are expected to show respect and care towards all people in school. Rewards and sanctions support this.

THE SCHOOL DAY: To lessen congestion, we operate a staggered start to the day. Children may arrive between 8:50 and 9:00 am.

Please click on the PTFA tab to find out about our BREAKFAST CLUB and how this could help you.

School ends at 3.30pm.

SPORTING PROVISION: Pictured our Netball Club, run by parents. We also work with staff at Pilton Community College to develop our PE and Games opportunities.
A part time teacher and specialists support this. There are termly Festivals, and older children have the opportunity to take part in the Oceanfest event in the summer.

Children have regular PE Games and Dance lessons using the school, the Willowbank, the Village Hall, the Leisure Centre and the Playing Field. Swimming sessions are normally held each year. We continue to be grateful for parental financial support used to help fund sessions at the Leisure Centre.
