"Great Torrington Community School and Sports College is a good school. High expectations and a strong focus on learning ensure pupils achieve well. Pupils enjoy coming to school, which is demonstrated by their outstanding attendance and positive behaviour. The school's work as a specialist sports college is very effective in promoting pupils' health and fitness and developing their self-esteem. They learn to take responsibility and many participate in the extensive range of clubs and sporting activities. As one appreciative pupil commented, 'You achieve your potential and grow here'."

Great Torrington is a friendly, welcoming town, set in the midst of rolling, unspoilt green countryside. An ancient settlement extraordinarily sited on an inland cliff top with steep drops down to the River Torridge below. This impressive situation offers spectacular views. In the very heart of Tarka Country, the wonderful landscape has remained practically unchanged since Henry Williamson wrote his classic novel “Tarka the Otter” in the 1920’s.

Great Torrington for years was valued for its strategic importance. The town had a significant role in the English Civil War, specifically, the Battle of Torrington in 1646 which marked the end of Royalist resistance in the West Country. Great Torrington today has become well recognised as an important heritage centre for the history of the 17th century. It is a vibrant community and people in the town, proud of their heritage, can often be seen dressed in costume for re-enactments, festivals and celebrations.

The essential hub for both visitors and residents to learn about places and activities in and around Great Torrington must be the towns Information Centre at Castle Hill.

Admissions & Transfers

The County Council is required to have a procedure in place for parents to apply for primary and secondary school places for their child to join Reception Year, Year 3 at Junior Schools or Year 7 at Secondary Schools. The procedure must cover all maintained primary and secondary schools, including those where the County Council is not the admitting authority (i.e. schools in other LAs, Foundation Schools and Voluntary Aided Schools). There must also be a procedure for parents to apply for places at other times, for example, late arrivals into the area or admission into other year groups.
