Holbeton Primary School Online Prospectus

Dear Parents,

Welcome to Holbeton Primary School.

If your child is to join us for the first time, we welcome you as parents and look forward to a happy and successful association over the coming years.

If you already have a child here at school may we renew the links between us.

Prospective parents are welcome to telephone the school 01752 830317 to arrange a mutually convenient time to visit.

Confidence in a school comes from knowing and understanding what is happening within it. We hope you will extend your knowledge through contact and regular opportunities for consultation. The education of our children is a joint responsibility and we believe that understanding and trust should form the basis of our shared responsibility.

We hope that your child will spend a happy, stimulating and enriching time in our school.

Aim

The aim of the school is to provide a happy, stimulating and caring environment that will enable each child to develop to their full potential academically and to prepare them socially and morally to take a responsible place in the community.

Bearing this in mind, the Governing Body has identified the following priorities.

  1. To ensure that each child reaches their full academic, social and emotional potential.
  2. To ensure that each child receives a broad and full education embracing the National Curriculum.
  3. To provide a caring and secure environment.
  4. To promote acceptable standards of behaviour in partnership with parents and the community.
  5. To establish close communication links with governors, staff, parents and the Community.

Maintaining a favourable pupil/teacher ratio is a priority for the Governing Body. We believe that keeping teaching groups small helps to ensure that all children can be treated individually and can be given the opportunity to develop to their full potential.

Ofsted Inspection

The school received a glowing report from OFSTED in the summer of 2006. The inspectors described Holbeton Primary School as ‘A good school with several outstanding features’. The report goes on to say ‘Relationships at all levels throughout the school are very good and underpin pupils’ effective personal development and the very good levels of pastoral care provided. There is an outstanding range of additional activities that enrich the curriculum and along with good teaching, this stimulates pupils’ attitudes to work.’ ‘Teachers know their pupils well and provide activities that successfully extend their thinking and understanding. Expectations for pupils’ effort and attention are high and pupils rise to the challenge’.

Awards

In 2006 the school was awarded the prestigious Artsmark Silver Award for our extensive work in all aspects of the Arts.

The school holds the nationally awarded Activemark.

We are delighted to be one of only 34 schools in the country working on the Primary Specialism Pilot project. This exciting project is looking at the impact of developing music through the arts on children’s attainment.

Once again may I welcome you to our school community, I look forward to working in partnership with you,

David Clifford

Headteacher

Clubs

Holbeton Primary School places great emphasis on OHSL (Out of Hours School Learning) clubs

and tries to offer a variety of clubs to ensure all of the children have a chance to take part.

A lot of the clubs offered to the children tend to be the traditional sports although we have, in the

past, offered skiing and surfing clubs. Clubs run from 3:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. (unless otherwise stated)

Children from the whole of Key Stage 2 are invited to take part (Plans are underway to offer

Key Stage 1 children clubs during lunchtime.)

Thanks to all the staff who give up their free time to run the clubs.

School Council

Our very active school council meets frequently to discuss many issues related to school life.

Representatives from each class bring suggestions and comments to each meeting and give feedback at assemblies so that the School Council truly involves the whole school.

Each year, the School Council proposes a charity - this year it's Childline. They organise collections and fund raising events to raise as much money as possible.

The children have raised approximately £440. This is a splendid effort and one which the children are rightly proud of.

THE CURRICULUM

The National Curriculum is the legal entitlement for all children but the whole curriculum of the school goes far beyond the formal timetable.   It involves a range of policies and practices to promote the personal and social development of pupils; to accommodate teaching and learning styles; to develop positive attitudes and values, and to forge an effective partnership with parents, the local community and industry.

Curriculum planning is central to the development of a purposeful education. The curriculum of Holbeton School ensures balance, breadth and depth of experience with emphasis on literacy and numeracy. Full account is taken of progress, continuity and different learning abilities.

From September 2007 the school has been designated as a pilot school for the Primary Specialism of music and as such greater opportunities in music through the arts will be offered to pupils with the aims of  enjoyment, confidence and developing academic potential for all children.

All children follow programmes of study in all the subjects of the National Curriculum and beyond.   Class teaching, co-operative group work and individual work is all used where appropriate. Pupils with special needs receive extra support in the classroom and able students are extended through individual programmes.

SPECIAL NEEDS

Every child in our school is ‘special.’ From the very beginning they are assessed in all areas of the curriculum and in their needs for social and emotional support. Every child’s needs are looked at individually and this forms the basis for planning and grouping children for different activities.  As the child moves up through the school, grouping becomes more formalised and the needs of the individual in each area of the curriculum are dealt with appropriately.  An able child could be working with an older group for Maths or could be part of a sports team consisting mainly of older children. A child who is slower to progress in a specific area works at times within a special group, or individually, and receives support in that area. The rate of development and progress varies with each child. Any potential learning problem that becomes apparent will be addressed though a joint approach by staff, parents and specialists as appropriate.

The school has adopted a Special Educational Needs Policy according to the SEN Code of Practice and via close consultation with the Ivybridge Learning Community. It has been formulated to provide for children with special educational needs, both with and without statements. The Special Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO) is Mrs Tucker.  There is an appointed governor responsible for Special Needs.

Copies of the SEN Policy are available in school for parents to read on request.  There is also a Policy for Able and Talented Pupils.
