School Prospectus

Ours is a lovely, friendly school with fabulous facilities and a committed and caring staff, supported fully by the parents and carers and the Governing Body. Situated between Plymouth and Tavistock, our school is well placed to provide a first class education to Primary aged children in Horrabridge, Dousland, Yelverton, and Crapstone. Parents and carers who live in, but are unable to obtain places at Walkhampton, Meavy, Buckland or Whitchurch Primaries, may well consider us an excellent alternative.

We strive to ensure that all our children have a happy, broad education that encourages them to do their best.

Our Headteacher, staff and governors are all working hard to ensure that the school continues to thrive and develop.

  • the children and their learning, their welfare, their happiness and their entitlement to a broad range of activities and experiences
  • working closely with parents and carers
  • developing the school’s relationship with our local community
  • improving the school through curriculum and staff development
  • the values embodied in our school’s aims

The Curriculum

Structure and content

We make every effort to ensure that the children’s first days in our school are well supported. Home visits and induction visits precede the children’s start at Horrabridge.

In their reception year, the children follow the Foundation Stage curriculum that supports all aspects of their development.

There are then two stages in the Primary phase (5-11) known as Key Stages:

  • Key Stage 1 covers Year groups 1 and 2 (ages 5 –7)
  • Key Stage 2 covers Year groups 3,4,5, and 6 (ages 7-11)

The National Curriculum is taught from Key Stage 1 and consists of core and foundation subjects:

  • Core subjects: English, Maths and Science
  • Foundation subjects: Information and Communications Technology (ICT), History, Geography, Music, Art and Design, Design and Technology (DT), and Physical Education (PE).

Personal Social and Health Education (PSHE) and Citizenship are also taught and our Year 6 children have weekly French and Spanish lessons.

Religious Education (RE) is taught according to the Devon Agreed Syllabus. Parents and carers have the right to withdraw their children from Religious Education; permission must be requested in writing from the headteacher.

Sex education is taught to our older children as part of our PSHE programme. Parents and carers may request to see teaching materials and may choose to withdraw their children from these lessons.

Residential visits are regarded as an important experience for our children before they leave us.

Assemblies are held every day, in class, key stage or whole school groups. The assemblies follow a theme that aims to cater for the children’s spiritual development. The main religions of the world are referred to and explored but the ethos of our assemblies is mainly Christian. Parents and carers may opt to withdraw their children from collective worship; requests must be made in writing to the headteacher. The school offers good facilities enabling effective inclusion to take place.
