Welcome to our website and thank you for showing an interest in Newtown Primary School, Exeter.

We are a small school compared with other schools in Exeter and see this as an advantage as the staff can really get to know the children.

The school became a primary school in September 2005.  We admitted pupils into Year 4 in 2005.  Our current number on roll is 130, including 19 children in our Speech and Language Centre. Many of these children are out of the schools catchment area and come to school by taxi from afar as Okehampton.

If you would like further information after visiting this website please contact the school.

Alison Greenhalgh, Headteacher (commenced September 2003)

Newtown parents are very supportive of the school and organise a number of fund raising events throughout the year. Every parent automatically becomes a member of FONS (Friends of Newtown School) when their child joins the school. Events are publisised in the school's weekly newsletter.

We are a small school so all our classes have two age groups in them. This is very common in Devon schools with some schools being very small with only two or three classes. In September 2007 we will have the following classes:

  • Reception / Year 1 - Oak
  • Reception / Year 1 - Elm
  • Year 2 - Maple
  • Year 3 - Chestnut
  • Year 4 / Year 5 - Sycamore
  • Year 5/ Year 6 - Beech

Due to the nature of having mixed age classes it is often necessary to change the composition of classes each year, for example when we have year 6 pupils they will leave at the end of the year leaving 20 places. These places are filled by the new year 6 children along with about 8-10 year 5 children. This has a ripple effect across the school with groups of children changing classes.

The children who attend the Speech and Language Centre work in the centre in the mornings and then integrate into the other classes in the afternoons.
